The London and North Eastern Railway, or LNER as it was familiarly known, was one of the Big Four companies that took control of Britain's railway network following the 'Grouping' in 1923. This network represented a challenging mixture of mainline and rural passenger routes, suburban services, and freight and industrial lines across the east coast of England and Scotland. Despite this challenge, the LNER became famous for its style, speed and efficiency, with record-breaking high-speed routes capturing the public's imagination, supported by iconic locomotives such as the Flying Scotsman and Mallard. Full of beautiful photographs, this is a perfect introduction to one of Britain's best-loved railway operators during the Age of Steam.

Although overshadowed in operational terms by the London & North Eastern Railway's prestigious Pacific locomotives and outnumbered numerically by the 4-6-0s designs of both the LMS and GWR, the various classes of 4-6-0 operated by the LNER were, arguably, among the most successful of the wheel arrangement to be constructed in Britain. While a number were inherited from the pre-Grouping companies, most notably the North Eastern and Great Eastern, the design can be said to have come of age with two of the all-time classic types - Gresley's Class B17 and Thompson's Class B1. The former, with their evocative names linked to country houses in East Anglia and football teams in the area served by the LNER, and the latter, many named after African antelopes, were hugely successful. In the first of the new 'Modeller's Guide' series, Peter Swinger, whose earlier books for OPC on the various types of LNER 4-6-0s helped establish him as one of the leading experts on the subject, provides a detailed reference work to the many designs of 4-6-0 both inherited by and designed for the LNER.Comprehensively illustrated throughout in both colour and mono, the book describes in depth each of the individual classes, providing readers with information useful in converting many of the proprietary models now available of the types. Along the excellent illustrative selection, the author's well-researched text is an excellent introduction to the history and operation of the various types.

Platform Souls written by Nicholas Whittaker and has been published by Icon Books Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-06 with Transportation categories.

Nicholas Whittaker's much-loved classic recollects the long sunny days of his childhood when, notepad in hand, jam sandwiches in the duffel bag, he happily spent his time jotting down train numbers during the Indian summer of steam and the heyday of diesel. Whittaker returns to his roots in this updated edition, casting a sceptical eye over recent developments, catching up with old acquaintances and considering the toll that half a century of ridicule and a couple of decades of privatisation have wrought upon his beloved pastime. As Andrew Martin notes in his Foreword, this is 'one of the best books ever written about rail enthusiasm'. Equally it is a poetically written memoir of growing up in a more innocent age, a hymn to British eccentricity and to the virtues of observing the world around you: 'Spotters – of trains, planes, buses or birds – are a last redoubt for something rapidly vanishing from our lives: looking outward, seeing, observing. People notice things less and less these days, while watching things more and more.' Praise for the first edition: 'An elegy: for the steam trains already vanishing when Whittaker's hobby began in 1964; for the short-lived diesel age which followed; for an era of near innocence.' Times Literary Supplement 'Whittaker writes with humour and considerable evocative power ... For anyone who will admit to having a childhood brush with this now derided hobby, Platform Souls brings it all rushing back.' Independent 'Destined to become the Fever Pitch of the sidings and embankments' Publishing News

Locomotive kit building remains the best route to achieving a varied range of motive power in most scales but it also retains a mystique, being associated with expert modellers and expensive tools. However, in this invaluable, richly illustrated volume, George Dent demonstrates how anyone can successfully assemble working kits with only a modicum of inexpensive equipment and experience. All aspects of assembly are covered in detail including working in plastics, resin and metal; the very basics of working and joining materials; installing ready-made power units and performing more complex operations, such as assembling etched metal chassis frames and intricate valve gear. Includes a full guide to essential tools, materials and adhesives, covers the art of soldering and explains the basics behind chassis construction and alignment. Presents an in-depth guide to the assembly of cylinders, coupling rods and valve gear and examines a range of power unit and transmission options. Demonstrates how to detail and modify kits for extra realism, illustrates painting, lining and weathering techniques and offers tips on running-in, testing and maintaining mechanisms. An essential guide to building locomotives and multiple units from kits and helps the modeller to achieve the best results from every kit. Aimed at railway modellers of all abilities, it is superbly illustrated with 537 colour photographs.

Arthur Peppercorn, a vicar's son from Herefordshire, was the last L N E R Chief Mechanical Engineer. He managed his department for a very short time before it was swept away in the wholesale changes that followed Nationalisation of British Railways in 1948.Although a disciple and follower of Sir Nigel Gresley, he was his own man and developed his talent for production engineering that fully complimented the design skills of his greatly respected leader. He then became a worthy deputy to Edward Thompson during a war that demanded great personal sacrifices from both men. When he finally became C M E in 1946 he used his wide talents and experience to lead in developing two successful pacific classes of locomotives, that many rate as being among the best locomotives of this type ever to appear in Britain. This book, which is the first detailed biography of Peppercorn, tells his fascinating story and describes the influences on his life and career, illustrating his many achievements along the way.
