Così, gli otto saggi raccolti nel libro - sotto certi aspetti molto diversi tra loro - riguardano tutti il mutamento: trasformazioni demografiche, tecnologiche, nella percezione del tempo, nelle scelte di maternità, etc. In particolare l'autrice indaga il rapporto tra i mutamenti sociali generali e i mutamenti nell'esperienza femminile; un rapporto che non è affatto ovvio e scontato. Studi recenti hanno infatti criticato la tradizionale periodizzazione storica, mostrando come alcuni fenomeni che generalmente sono stati considerati dei punti di svolta non sempre siano tali nell'esperienza femminile; i criteri cioè con cui valutare il mutamento non sono uguali. Non sono gli stessi per uomini e donne, ma non sono gli stessi neppure per tutte le donne. Spiega l'autrice nel primo e nel quinto saggio - dove mostra come il movimento delle donne, nato a partire dalla riflessione sulla differenza tra uomo e donna, abbia consentito l'emergere di differenze tra le donne, irriducibili a un'unità di genere - che il mondo femminile è attraversato da molte e continue diversità (nel grado di oppressione nei livelli di identificazione con il ruolo, nelle percezioni e nei progetti di sé come donna). E queste differenze emergono tanto più quando, come nel caso della Saraceno, si cerca di cogliere non soltanto gli effetti più vistosi e appariscenti, ma anche le risonanze profonde del mutamento. Il libro infatti non si limita a studiare i mutamenti nel comportamento (per esempio: comportamenti demografici, livelli di istruzione, partecipazione al mercato del lavoro, etc.) ma cerca anche di valutare in che modo questi mutamenti indichino delle trasformazioni nei modelli di valore. Due livelli di analisi che non coincidono inevitabilmente. Per esempio, il fatto che sia aumentata la partecipazione femminile al mercato del lavoro non significa necessariamente che si siano trasformati i valori e le strutture di priorità da parte delle donne. ... La ricerca si propone di rilevare l’esistenza di differenze nella presenza di stereotipi di genere nei libri di testo per la scuola primaria stampati a dieci e quindici anni di distanza dal 1999, anno di stipula del Polite, l’accordo di autoregolamentazione dell’editoria scolastica che aveva l’obiettivo di ripensare i libri scolastici nell’ottica di una rappresentazione paritaria di uomini e donne. In questo quindicennio i rapporti tra sessismo ed educazione hanno acquisito attenzioni e visibilità mai avute prima, guadagnando attraverso il dibattito e lo scontro sulla cosiddetta “ideologia (e/o teoria) del gender” spazi nel dibattito politico e nella cronaca del tutto preclusi in precedenza. Nonostante gli interventi su processi e materiali didattici abbiano ottenuto una note-vole eco, rimane complesso valutarne l’effettiva consistenza.
