Obiettivo primario di questa pubblicazione è quello di illustrare le modalità di applicazione delle metodologie quantitative di decisione che costituiscono la base fondamentale dell’Ottimizzazione e della Ricerca Operativa, in modo da consentire agli studenti una miglior comprensione del loro funzionamento e fornire un utile supporto per il loro impiego. Il volume presenta pertanto una raccolta di esercizi risolti, relativi ad alcuni degli argomenti fondamentali della disciplina: ottimizzazione lineare continua ed intera, grafi e reti, gestione di progetti, teoria delle decisioni… La raccolta è suddivisa in due parti, all’interno delle quali, in sezioni distinte, vengono affrontate in modo specifico le singole metodologie: la prima parte riporta per ogni sezione i testi degli esercizi assegnati, mentre la seconda illustra la risoluzione di gran parte di essi, commentandola con brevi cenni di teoria. La predisposizione del testo è avvenuta tenendo in particolare considerazione le esigenze didattiche e gli obiettivi di formazione di un corso di laurea in Ingegneria Gestionale: gli esercizi proposti, pertanto, riguardano per la maggior parte problemi tecnologici e logistici o relativi alla gestione di impresa e presentano un forte orientamento applicativo, più che teorico.

Cosa si intende per Ricerca Operativa? Non esiste a tutt’oggi una definizione univoca. Riportiamo quella dell’Associazione Inglese – OR Society -, che forse è la più aderente alla realtà: “Ricerca Operativa è l’applicazione di metodi scientifici per la soluzione di problemi complessi che nascono nella direzione e gestione di grandi sistemi di uomini, macchine, materiali e denaro nell’industria, affari, amministrazione e difesa. L’approccio caratteristico della Ricerca Operativa è lo sviluppo di un modello matematico del sistema oggetto di studio, mediante il quale predire e confrontare i risultati di decisioni, strategie e controlli alternativi. Lo scopo consiste nell’aiutare i decisori a determinare scientificamente la loro politica e le loro azioni”. Il libro copre alcuni argomenti fondamentali della Ricerca Operativa. Dopo un capitolo introduttivo sulla Ricerca Operativa e la sua storia, nel capitolo 2 viene dato ampio spazio ai metodi per la costruzione di modelli di Programmazione Lineare. Nei due capitoli successivi vengono descritti la Programmazione Lineare e la Dualità, che costituiscono i fondamenti di un qualsiasi corso di Ricerca Operativa in Italia ed all’estero. Successivamente, gli autori introducono la teoria della Complessità computazionale per consentire di apprezzare la complessità dei problemi di ottimizzazione e distinguere l’efficienza di algoritmi alternativi per la loro soluzione. Nel sesto capitolo vengono studiati importanti problemi su reti (grafi), quali: ricerca di cammini, individuazione di strutture particolari (alberi), calcolo di flusso di minimo costo o di flussi massimi ecc. Nel settimo ed ultimo capitolo vengono forniti alcuni cenni sulla Programmazione Lineare Intera e su un classico metodo di risoluzione esatta per questo tipo di problemi, il Branch and Bound.

L'opera In questo volume vengono trattate l'Ottimizzazione Combinatoria e la Programmazione Non Lineare nel continuo. Si ritiene, infatti, che questi due campi dell'Ottimizzazione siano, oltre alla Programmazione Lineare nel continuo già trattata in un precedente libro (R. Tadei, F. Della Croce, "Elementi di Ricerca Operativa", Progetto Leonardo, Esculapio, Bologna, 2005), quelli di maggiore interesse a livello internazionale ed i più trattati nei corsi di laurea, di laurea specialistica e di dottorato in Italia. L'ottimizzazione combinatoria individua teorie, modelli ed algoritmi relativi a problemi dove tutte o parte delle variabili possono assumere solo valori discreti. Le variabili di tipo discreto sono usate per modellare situazioni di indivisibilità e, in particolare, le variabili 0/1 per rappresentare decisioni di tipo sì/no, ad esempio con riferimento all'utilizzo o meno di un arco di un grafo, all'effettuazione di un investimento od alla lavorazione di un prodotto. Problemi di questo tipo sono i più diffusi nella realtà, ad esempio per la predisposizione degli orari dei treni, per l'organizzazione della produzione industriale, per la pianificazione e la gestione delle reti, siano esse di tipo telematico, informatico, viario od altro ancora. La programmazione non lineare nel continuo interessa un ampio campo di problemi reali, dove l'obiettivo da perseguire e/o i vincoli del problema si presentano in forma non lineare, ad esempio in problemi di controllo ottimo, oppure nella ricerca di condizioni di equilibrio per reti di telecomunicazioni od ancora in alcuni problemi di localizzazione o di gestione di risorse.
