Now in its second edition, Prototyping and Modelmaking for Product Design, by practising product development consultant Bjarki Hallgrimsson, is essential reading for both students and design professionals. Prototyping and ModelMaking for Product Design goes behind the scenes to illustrates how prototypes are used to help designers understand problems better, explore more imaginative solutions, investigate human interaction more fully and test functionality so as to de-risk the design process. Following an introduction on the purpose of prototyping, specific materials, tools and techniques are examined in detail, with step-by-step tutorials and industry examples of real and successful products illustrating how prototypes are used to help solve design problems. Workflow is also discussed, using a mixture of hands-on and digital tools. This new edition includes case studies representing technological developments such as prototyping user experience and interactive electronic products, as well as a new expanded section on digital modelmaking tools, including 3D printing and laser cutting. The first chapters of the book explain why prototyping is so important to the design process. The many uses of prototyping will be shown in the context of several comprehensive projects by some of the world's leading design firms. The second part is an introduction to the typical materials used by designers in their prototyping efforts and how to work with them. In all cases, the approach is to use digital and manual tools in a complementary and effective fashion. Tutorials were specifically developed that underline the back and forth of digital and manual ways of working. The emphasis is on the kinds of construction that can be done by the designers themselves. Health and safety is stressed in terms of personal responsibility and awareness. Topics covered include:Definition of prototyping and modelmakingPrototyping as a form of problem solvingModelmakingPhysical and digital prototypesBuidling by hand and using digital technologies

Building prototypes and models is an essential component of any design activity. Modern product development is a multi-disciplinary effort that relies on prototyping in order to explore new ideas and test them sufficiently before they become actual products. Prototyping and Modelmaking for Product Designers illustrates how prototypes are used to help designers understand problems better, explore more imaginative solutions, investigate human interaction more fully and test functionality so as to de-risk the design process. Following an introduction on the purpose of prototyping, specific materials, tools and techniques are examined in detail, with step-by-step tutorials and industry examples of real and successful products illustrating how prototypes are used to help solve design problems. Workflow is also discussed, using a mixture of hands on and digital tools. A comprehensive modern prototyping approach is crucial to making informed design decisions, and forms a strategic part of a successful designer's toolkit.

The presented approach enables a gradual approximation to system modelling towards business forms-based applications, by being able to derive a default UI and an executable prototype from a domain model alone, an extended domain model or from an extended domain model and a use case model. It is also possible to have these initial models in different levels of abstraction or rigour, and refine them in an incremental and iterative manner.

Rapid prototyping (RP) has revolutionized how prototypes are made and small batch manufacturing is carried out. With rapid prototyping, The strategies used to produce a part change a number of important considerations and limitations previously faced by tool designers and engineers. Now in its third edition, this textbook is still the definitive text on RP. it covers the key RP processes, The available models and specifications, and their principles, materials, advantages and disadvantages. Examples of application areas in design, planning, manufacturing, biomedical engineering, art and architecture are also given. The book includes several related problems so that the reader can test his or her understanding of the topics. New to this edition, The included CD-ROM presents animated illustrations of the working principles of today's key RP processes.

Models and Prototypes is the first exhibition in the Focus series, a collection-based series of publications and exhibitions intended to examine significant works from the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum's collection within the context of contemporary discourses. As a preparatory step, models have always occupied a special place in the context of artistic production. This changed in the twentieth century when many artists set out to redefine the parameters of art and artistic production. With new artistic objectives, structural and conceptual models emerged as complete and viable works of art in and of themselves. Beginning in the 1910s, the model - conceived as a system defined by a set of rules - became increasingly important, as did boxes, model-scale display cases, and architectural maquettes. Marcel Duchamp and many Conceptual artists of the 1960s radically challenged existing definitions of the artwork with the help of structural and conceptual models and the emergence of an emphasis on multiples. The centrality of models for contemporary artists, many of whom are also interested in social and historical issues, presses the question of why they became and remain such a compelling subject and tool. Models and Prototypes includes artwork by Mark Bennett, Joseph Beuys, Daniel Buren, Thomas Demand, Marcel Duchamp, Isa Genzken, Jenny Holzer, Wassily Kandinsky, Claus Oldenburg, Edward Ruscha, and Katrin Sigurdadottir, among others. Essay by curator Catharina Manchanda, Ph.D., Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum.
