This is a book discussing China's economic transition and development since the beginning of modern times. The book is chronologically divided into eight connected chapters that collectively provide a comprehensive and coherent discussion of the book's focus - China's economic transition and development in modern and contemporary times. However, each one of the eight chapters is sufficiently self-contained and can be read on its own, which potentially enhances the usefulness of the book. Chapter 1 provides an introduction and overview. All the subsequent chapters go into detail with each one of them pertaining to a specific historical time period as the corresponding chapter title properly implies. Chapter 2 focuses on the period of transformational development of the Late Qing Dynasty and the socio-economic situation after the founding of the Republic of China. Chapter 3 is about the Chinese economy in wars and covers the period of the Anti-Japanese War and China's War of Liberation. Chapter 4 is concerned with the economy under the early governance of the People's Republic of China while Chapter 5 focuses on the subsequent twists and turns of the socialist economic construction. The longest chapter, Chapter 6 is devoted to the great turning point in the history of China's socialist construction - the reform and opening up. The last two chapters, Chapters 7 and 8, stride into the 21st Century. Chapter 7 is about the new stage of China's economy, new development strategies, completion and prospect, and the achievements of the first 12 years into the new century, while Chapter 8 discusses the economic new normal and the socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era.

This book provides a comprehensive and balanced view of the main transformations that are happening in the Chinese economy today. This view has developed from more than 200 interviews and numerous surveys (based on primary data), in addition to mainstream literature by academia and consultancy companies. The general view of China is often either black or white. Global markets are generally guided by euphoria or fear. Academia are optimistic or pessimistic about China's longer-term growth potential. People believe or distrust Chinese data. These black and white pictures are, in many cases, easy to communicate (and even proved by anecdotic evidence), but are not correct.Modern China is not the result of tradeoffs but ambiguities: market-driven AND government-driven, central government AND local government control, increasing brand loyalty AND extreme price sensitivity, fall of consumption as percentage of GDP AND strong increase in consumption, export as an important driver behind longer-term development AND yet hardly visible as a determinant of today's economic growth. The aim of this book is to help readers understand the often conflicting nature of China, not only from an economic point of view, but also from political and social point of view. In this sense, it tries to give the reader an eclectic picture of China — the country of contradictions. That is a difficult task because of the linkages between reforms and the fact that there are many preconceived ideas of China, its development and choices. It is interesting to note that the further from China people are, the more negative their views towards China. This book will make clear that this pessimism is overdone. In the longer term, the author is quite positive about China's transformations, believing that the rise of China is here to stay and that this is the major factor of change of this century. remove

This book by the renowned Chinese scholar Dr. Yinxing Hong provides the reader with a perceptive analysis of what has worked in China’s development model. Over the past 30 years, China has experienced a remarkable economic rise, but it now faces the challenge of switching the drivers of this economic growth, which have proven so successful. The path has not been an easy one, and many challenges lie ahead. However, the rise of the Chinese economy has been the most significant global development in recent years. Is there a specific Chinese model? How was the Chinese transition, from a Soviet-style economic structure to one that is more open to market influences and the global market, achieved? In 15 essays, Dr. Hong provides fascinating insights to these and other key questions. The essays cover the challenges involved in transition and how the market-oriented reforms progressed; what the consequences of the transition were for public goods provision and how China opened up its economic system. The essays in Part II address the remaining challenges facing rural areas trying to develop a more consumer-driven economic base, and how to effectively modify the model of economic development. This book provides a sound basis for policymakers and scholars alike, as well as anyone who wants to get an insider’s view of the progress and challenges faced by China’s economic development.

China's transition from a planned economy to a market economy has succeeded in producing more than a decade of phenomenal growth. Whilst similar reforms in countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union have seen an initial downturn in production, usually with a significant rise in unemployment, the success of the approach taken by China has been remarkable. However, China embarked upon the process, without a well-designed blueprint at the outset. The resulting piecemeal, partial, incremental, and often experimental approach has proved complicated to implement - requiring a complex melding of politics and economics, internal and foreign affairs, government and market. How the difficult task of balancing the diverse array of often competing concerns has been achieved is the subject of this book, which examines the dismantling of the centrally planned system and the mechanism of institutional change in Chinese transition.

This study examines the Chinese model of modern development, reflecting on the historical experience of China's reform and highlighting theoretical issues that are crucial for understanding the reform in its historical and global contexts. Bringing together articles from scholars, including designers of and active participants in the reform, opinion setters in the current debates on the nature and future of the reform, and Western scholars whose ideas have had great impact on Chinese intellectuals, the book considers the goals of China's reforms and the ways in which these goals may be achieved, the most urgent issues now facing China, and globalization and its impact on China.

Transforming China written by Peter Nolan and has been published by Anthem Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Business & Economics categories.

At the end of the 1970s, China was a poor country with a huge population, ruled by the Chinese Communist Party. The domestic economy was organized through direct administrative instructions and was isolated from the international economy. After a quarter of a century, China has been transformed beyond imagination. In the course of this transformation, China's policymakers have faced enormous challenges. The essays in this book address different aspects of those challenges. The 'development' challenge involved devising policies that would raise the mass of the Chinese people out of poverty and avoid the disasters that had, in the worst cases, caused millions of deaths through famine. The 'transition' challenge involved, firstly, resolving the relationship between changes in the economic and political systems; and secondly, finding the correct sequence and nature of reforms necessary to improve economic performance. The 'globalization' challenge involved identifying the best way in which to integrate China's economic system with the international economy at a time of revolutionary change in the global business system. These essays seek both to enhance understanding of China's immense success in meeting these challenges in the past and to provide an indication of the challenges that still lie ahead. China's system reforms have been described as 'groping for stones to cross the river'. The journey across the river is far from over, and the other bank is only dimly visible.

Understanding The Growth And Development Of Contemporary China From Multiple Perspectives written by Yunhuan Zhu and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-06-30 with categories.

This book discusses economic development of contemporary China from multiple perspectives. China was historically the world's largest economy and enjoyed one of the most splendid civilizations. China's GDP consisted of about one third of the world's total by 1820. However, because of the stagnation in national science and technology development and the impact of war, China fell behind the world economic development soon after. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China and especially since the initiation of the Reform and Opening Up, China's strong economic growth and development has made the country the focus of world attention. People all over the world are curious to know more about contemporary China and its economic development: how the Chinese economy is and where it is going. Such issues not only concern everyone's vital interests, but also have important influences on the whole world economy. This book discusses related issues and strives to suggest answers to a host of important questions. The book is divided into eleven connected chapters that collectively provide a comprehensive and coherent discussion of the book's central focus. Each of the eleven chapters is also sufficiently self-contained and can be read on its own, which potentially enhances the usefulness of the book.
