Excerpt from Modern First Year Algebra The most notable undertaking in the field of instruction in mathe maties in the past decade has been the work of the National Committee on Mathematical Requirements, culminating in its summary report, recently issued, and in its final report which will appear in a short time. One immediate result of this undertaking has been a revision of the definitions of the units in high school mathematics by the College En trance Requirements Board. The extent to which the Wells and Hart First Year Algebra, written eleven years ago, harmonizes with these recent reports is most gratifying. This M odem First Year Algebra incorporates, first of all, the changes suggested by the eleven added years of experience of its author in teach ing the subject to boys and girls of high school grade; and secondly, other changes which are suggested by these recent reports. It is a new book. While, naturally, it is based upon the Wells and Hart First Year Algebra, the text has been rewritten wherever any improvement could be made in the instruction or expression. The explanations in the text are often more complete than those of the First Year Algebra, and those represented a high-water mark eleven years ago. This is done to help teachers not to endeavor to super sede them. The examples are all new, and so, too, are almost all the problems. Enough examples and problems are given in the text so that teachers will not need to seek drill material from other sources. Excerpt from A First Course in Algebra This text is as brief as the algebra of years ago, and yet contains all that is good in modern mathematical thought. Attention is called to the introduction of graphical methods through simple horizontal and vertical measurements (exer cise 4, Exercise 41, problems 28 This procedure makes the transition to Cartesian coordinates a natural one. Teach ers will find that the color scheme recommended in graphs will greatly aid the student in connecting related data. Peda gogical advantage is gained through the combining of related and reverse processes. (chapters III, VII, X, XII, XIII.) Excerpt from Elementary Algebra: First Year Course The sign of multiplication (x) is often replaced in algebra by a dot (e), which is written above the line to distinguish it from a decimal point. Thus3 4means3 4. The product of two numbers, one or both of which are' represented by letters, is usually indicated by writing the numbers one after the other without any Sign between them. Thus ab means a x b or a b, 4 c means 4 x e or 4 C. When only one of two numbers is represented by a letter, it is custom ary to write the letter last. Thus we write 4 c, but not 0 4. Excerpt from First Year Algebra In this text the authors have endeavored to present a course in algebra for the first year of high school which shall be simple, comprehensible to the students, and of high educational and mathematical value. They have made the solution of equations and problems the core of the course; they have emphasized the essentials, avoiding little-used complexities of algebra; they have taught new ideas inductively; they have emphasized thoughtful rather than mechanical solutions of exercises; they have tried to make the course maintain and increase the students efficiency in arithmetic; they have tried to make the course interesting by including varied problem material and historical notes, and valuable by including practical applications. The essential features of the course have been tried out in the classroom by many teachers. The text contains sufficient material to meet the needs of schools whose pupils have studied algebra before entering the high school; the topics have been arranged, however, so that a class may easily cover the essentials of the course in one school year. Attention is directed to the following devices that have been employed to attain the desired ends: Each topic that is taken up is used in the solution of equations. (See 9, 10, 12, 41, 51, 60, 107, etc.) This makes the study of the various topics purposeful, allows for good gradation in the book as a whole, and emphasizes the equation. Problems are introduced at short intervals. Informational, geometric, and physics problems in reasonable number are used. New types of problems are introduced gradually, appearing first in classified lists, are taught with extreme care, and are used thereafter in miscellaneous lists. Experimental verification is suggested for some of the facts from geometry and physics that are used. (See Exercises 7, 25, 28, 29, 38, 39, 49, 106; 13, 142, 143, 190, etc.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Modern Junior Mathematics, Vol. 1 Until recently upper elementary and high school work in mathematics was planned for the pupil who was expected to continue it in the university. Although logical, its arrangement was neither psychological nor pedagogical. Some progress, however, has been made recently in adapting the study to the needs and abilities of pupils. In the junior high or intermediate school, work in mathematics in the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades should be complete in itself and at the same tirne preparatory to senior high school work. No effort should be made to finish arithmetic in the eighth grade and algebra in the ninth, while denying the child the interest and beauty that lie in geometry and trigonometry until his taste for mathematics has been destroyed. Nor will alternate bits of formal algebra, geometry, and trigonometry solve the problem. The result is a mastery of none and a confusion in all. Experience has proved that the necessary elements of arithmetic can be taught and certain definite skill developed in the first six grades. In the seventh grade business applications of arithmetic with the Simplest elements of bookkeeping should be given. In the eighth grade mensuration should be taught experimentally or through observational geometry, and, through that, in a natural and meaningful way. Excerpt from Lessons Introductory to the Modern Higher Algebra It may be said to date from a paper published by Professor Boole in the Cambridge Mathematical J our nal for November, 1841, which was mainly occupied with applications of the following theorem: Let an or dinary algebraic equation be made homogeneous by writing a: y for 12; let these variables then be linearly transformed by writing M: pg, Xx My for x and y and let V 0 be the condition that the transformed equation shall have equal roots; then the function V will be equal to the similar function for the original equa tion multiplied by a function of A, p, N, pf, and not in volving the coefficients of the original equation. The truth of this principle is manifest from the fact that if the original equation have a square factor, the trans formed must have one likewise; that, therefore, one of the functions in question must vanish whenever the other does, and, consequently, the one must contain the other as a factor; and since each of the coefficients of the transformed only contains in the first degree the coefficients of the original, the two functions, being of the same degree in those coefficients, can only differ by a quantity independent of them. Similar reasoning ap plies to functions of any number of variables. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
