Excerpt from The History of Modern Painting, Vol. 4 of 4 Hen the English gallery in the Munich International Exhibition was opened in the summer of 1888 there hung a full-length portrait in the centre of the principal wall. The model was a tall and very slender woman she seemed in the act of stepping away from the spectator towards the back ground oi the picture, and was seen in profile just as she turned her head, throwing back a last glance before vanishing. It was Lady Archibald Camp bell, one oi the most beautiful women in England. In this portrait she lived in all her charm, with her fragile figure, her blond hair, her aristocratic hands and deep eyes. Or, in better words, the likeness gave the essence of her haughty and distinguished beauty, what remains of a figure when the artist has eliminated from his impression everything which is not in the highest degree refined and exquisite. In the face of this sylph-like being as she floated away into the picture there was an expression of slight contempt, as if this beautiful woman had pity on all the plain crowd in the exhibition whom she would have to contemplate, or all the unfortunate, badly painted portraits hanging around. The whole figure stood out in grey against a black back ground, being only enlivened in a soft way by delicate greyish-blue and brownish-grey tones, with a little blond colour and a little rose-colour. Never theless the picture was full of air, a strangely soft harmonious air. It was felt that the model was living, walking, and moving. Excerpt from Modern Painting: Its Tendency and Meaning In stripping art of its intriguing charm and its soothing vagueness it is not my intention to do away with its power to delight. To the contrary, I believe that only by relieving paint ing of its dead cargo of literature, archaeology and illustration can it be made to function freely. Painting should be as pure an art as music, and the struggles of all great painters have been toward that goal. Its medium colour - is as elemental as sound, and when properly presented (with the same scientific exactness as the harmonies of the tone-gamut) it is fully as capable of engendering aesthetic emotion as is music. Our delight in music, no matter how primitive, is not dependent on an imitation of natural sounds. Music's pleas urable significance is primarily intelleétual. So can painting, by its power to create emotion and not mere sensation, provoke deep zesthetic feeling of a far greater intensity than the delight derived from transcription and drama. Modern painting strives toward the heightening of emo tional ecstasy; and my esthétique is intended to pave the way for an appreciation of art which will make possible the reception of that ecstasy. With this object ever in view I have weighed the painting of the last century, and have judged it solely by its ability or inability to call forth a profound aesthetic emotion. The Procession of Cimabue's Madonna was Mr. Leighton's first Academy picture. The name of the young continental student was not known here, and his work was an almost unparalleled surprise. The exquisite serenity of the treatment at a time in which Art was tawdry when it was in any sense decorative; the chaste and cool colour at a period when somewhat garish hues prevailed; the lofty sense of beauty in a day of prettiness; in a word, the inspiration of mediaeval Florence shining upon Trafalgar Square the thing was altogether unexpected, as new in its style as in its merits.
