The development of modernism has brought tremendous changes to all aspects of society. The great development of materials, science and technology shapes a severe situation. But cultural development seems increasingly weak and extreme, which requires revolutionary and breakthrough thinking. Based on such circumstances, the development of calligraphy and painting art, in the greenhouse of our ancient civilization, is still hesitating instead of moving forward. There is no way forward. Neither does it have a little sense of changing. Of course, under such a premise, we can see that a lot of artists both in mainland and in Taiwan are actively exploring and they don not forget their historical mission. This is quite a relief. I now produce this article not for simple, brutal criticism, but to summarize. I hope to give the future generations a reference and if it will be able to play a role as a guideline, it is very meaningful.

My dissertation investigates the foreign and domestic forces instrumental in the development of modernist abstract painting in postwar Taiwan between 1957 and 1968. My work contributes to the discourse of postwar abstract painting and modernism by providing a critical study of the relationship between calligraphy, ink painting, and abstraction. Mainland-born, Taiwan-educated artists continued the unfinished project of May Fourth by conducting the first thorough re-examination of Chinese art traditions and interacting with European and American modern art currents. Against a backdrop of post-colonial cultural reorientation, post-civil war social reconstruction, martial law, and Cold War geopolitical realities, abstraction emerged as a style that upheld traditional Chinese aesthetic principles, that translated personal experiences of displacement, and that promised readability in the international arena. The first two chapters examine the emergence of abstraction from outward- and inward-looking angles, respectively. Chapter One examines the curatorial agenda and interests behind "The New Chinese Landscape : Six Contemporary Chinese Artists," the first major exhibition of contemporary Chinese art, 1966-1968. Chapter Two considers the pivotal role of two literature and arts magazines, Wenxing and Bihui, as cultural producers and dialogue generators in the formation of Taiwan Modernism. It highlights the tight relationship between the artists and poets as they constructed a discourse for modernism. Chapter Three traces the evolution of the meaning of abstraction in postwar Taiwan, paying special attention to the "abstract landscape" by Liu Kuo-sung and Chuang Che, the most prominent artists of the Fifth Moon Society. Chapters Four and Five look at the respective practices of Liu and Chuang and offer detailed formal analysis of their paintings, especially on their treatment of calligraphy and abstraction. In Chapter Four, I analyze the artistic trajectory of Liu and the development of his vernacular landscape paintings throughout the 1960s. In Chapter Five, I identify Chuang's use of brokenness as an aesthetic that confronts the predicament of displacement. In both chapters I examine the patronage and reception of their work outside of Taiwan to place them in the larger discourse of postwar abstraction and show the challenges in traversing cultural boundaries for transnational artists of their postwar generation.

The thesis is composed of series of paintings, starting from portraits of an island in Taiwan, that represent a search for the relationship between site and Shan-Shui, between resemblance and the abstract. These paintings depict everyday scenes that combine events, viewpoints and memories. Other series set in London look at 'alternative nature' and 'staged authenticity', in which people are seen as insiders or outsiders. This accompanying report is divided into four sections, weaving together three methodologies--theoretical, historical, and practical--to study the aesthetics of contemporary 'landscape-like' painting in Taiwan, in particular the concepts of the sublime and Shan-Shui. This practice-led research uses my own painting to address these issues and to question my position within the Taiwanese art world. First, I outline key points in the history of Taiwanese painting starting from the period of Japanese rule. Through specific examples I aim to clarify how identity and cultural transformation in Taiwan has taken place through the influences of Modernism and Shan-Shui. I also look at the differences and overlaps between the concepts of 'the painterly sublime' and 'Qi-Yun Sheng-Dong', raising questions about the political implications. Secondly, I look at artists from Asia and the West with particular attention to the physical material qualities of painting and elaborate on the aesthetic notion of Bi-Mo (which relates to brush marks) and how this relates to my concept 'landscape-like'. In the third part I discuss my own paintings, referring to the sublime, Shan-Shui and the concept of 'landscape-like'. The fourth section is based on my response to the current political condition of Taiwanese Art and focuses on a project that culminated in the London Start Art Fair entitled Future Island, 2016. In conclusion, I suggest that the contemporary appearance of Shan-Shui and the sublime as crucial to 'landscape-like painting' in Taiwan as a political form.
