For several years, the two parallel worlds of Molecular Conductors in one hand and Molecular Magnetism in the other have grown side by side, the former essentially based on radical organic molecules, the latter essentially based on the high spin properties of metal complexes. Over the last few years however, organometallic derivatives have started to play an increasingly important role in both worlds, and have in many ways contributed to open several passages between these two worlds. This volume recognizes this important emerging evolution of both research areas. It is not intended to give a comprehensive view of all possible organometallic materials, and polymers for example were not considered here. Rather we present a selection of the most recent research topics where organometallic derivatives were shown to play a crucial role in the setting of conducting and/or magnetic properties in crystalline materials. First, the role of organometallic anions in tet- thiafulvalenium-based molecular conductors is highlighted by Schlueter, while Kubo and Kato describe very recent ortho-metalated chelating ligands appended to the TTF core and their conducting salts. The combination of conducting and magnetic properties and the search for p–d interactions are analyzed in two comp- mentary contributions by Myazaki and Ouahab, while Valade focuses on the only class of metal bis(dithiolene) complexes to give rise to superconductive molecular materials, in association with organic as well as organometallic cations.

Of the molecules measured with EFISH there is a striking constancy of their microbeta products and even the more approximate beta's themselves. These molecules are all nitrobenzene derivatives and the observation could be made that the magnitude of beta is more or less tied to this conjugated portion of the molecules. Comparison of the power data with the molecular hyperpolarizabilities illustrates that a study of powder response tells essentially nothing whatever about molecular properties. Attention should be directed to crystal studies in the search for materials destined for application to the processing of weak optical signals. The dependence of molecular polarizability on concentration in some solvents for some solutes at very low concentrations has not been clearly seen before. These measurements were all made on solutions of less than 1 molecular percent and so solute-solute interaction almost certainly is absent.

ABSTRACT: My research presents the results of an investigation into the photophysical properties of organometallic materials that contain platinum and iridium. Characterizing the excited-state properties of these types of compounds is necessary for a complete understanding of the materials which may have application in opto-electronics, as molecular wires, or as nonlinear optical materials, as well as help satisfy the need to gain insight into the fundamental nature of triplet excited states of conjugated organic systems. First, in order to partially characterize the excited states of these materials, a transient absorption apparatus was designed and constructed. Second, a series of platinum-containing molecules with two platinum atoms and different end groups were studied to examine interrupted conjugation through metal centers. Third, long carbon chains end-capped with platinum atoms were analyzed to determine the relationship between chain length and nonradiative decay rates. Lastly, an iridium complex with a known two-photon-absorbing ligand was studied to determine if excited-state absorption could be achieved through an initial multi-photon absorption process, and consequently exhibit nonlinear optical properties. The goal of this work was to further the understanding of triplet excited states in organometallic systems. The most important conclusions of this study are as follows: (i) the triplet excited states of small dinuclear platinum acetylides are more localized than the singlet excited states, and have disrupted conjugation through the platinum atom; (ii) long carbon chains display correlation to the energy gap law; (iii) the triplet excited state can be populated through two-photon absorption, which leads to nonlinear optical effects through enhanced dual-mechanism absorption.

In the ten years since the scientific rationale for the design, synthesis and application of inorganic and organometallic polymers (IOPs) was first conceptualised, we have witnessed the first tentative exploration of IOPs as precursors to new materials, with efforts focusing on the design and synthesis of novel ceramic precursors. Developing expertise led to precursor studies combined with the characterisation of the transformation processes that occur when IOPs are converted to ceramic materials. Now at maturity, the science presented in this volume reveals the polymer precursor approach to materials synthesis together with examples of processing ceramic shapes for a range of mechanical properties, the development of sophisticated, noninvasive analytical techniques, and IOP design rationales relying on well-defined processing-property relationships. The production of multifunctional IOPs is described, providing ion conductivity, gas sensing, bioactivity, magnetic properties, etc., combined with processability. The existence of well-defined IOPs and the exquisite control that can be exerted on sol-gel systems now provide access to such a variety of mixed organic-organometallic and/or inorganic hybrid systems that their exploitation is likely to develop into an entirely new field of materials chemistry. Future exciting avenues of research are also being opened up with the advent of buckyballs, Met-Cars, dopable preceramics, rigid-rod organometallics, and molecular tinkertoys.

The field of nonlinear optics emerged three decades ago with the development of the first operating laser and the demonstration of frequency doubling phenomena. These milestone discoveries not only generated much interest in laser science, but also set the stage for future work on nonlinear optics. This book presents an excellent overview of the exciting new advances in nonlinear optical (NLO) materials and their applications in emerging photonics technologies. It is the first reference source available to cover every NLO material published through 1995. All theoretical approaches, measurement techniques, materials, technologies, and applications are covered. With more than 1,800 bibliographic citations, 324 figures, 218 tables, and 812 equations, this book is an invaluable reference source for graduate and undergraduate students, researchers, scientists and engineers working in academia and industries in chemistry, solid-state physics, materials science, optical and polymer engineering, and computational science.

This book is an essential reference work for the academic and industrial chemists and will provide up-to-date material at the cutting edge of chemistry research. This widely-acclaimed serial contains authoritative reviews that address all aspects of organometallic chemistry, a field which has expanded enormously since the publication of Volume 1 in 1964. Almost all branches of chemistry and material science now interface with organometallic chemistry--the study of compounds containing carbon-metal bonds. Organometallic compounds range from species which are so reactive that they only have a transient existence at ambient temperatures to species which are thermally very stable. Organometallics are used extensively in the synthesis of useful compounds on both large and small scales. Industrial processes involving plastics, polymers, electronic materials, and pharmaceuticals all depend on advancements in organometallic chemistry. In basic research, organometallics have contributed inter alia to: Metal cluster chemistry Surface chemistry The stabilization of highly reactive species by metal coordination Chiral synthesis The formulation of multiple bonds between carbon and the other elements and between the elements themselves
