Jean-Baptiste Poquelin is better known to us by his stage name of Molière. He was born in Paris, to a prosperous well-to-do family on 15th January 1622. In 1631, his father purchased from the court of Louis XIII the posts of "valet of the King's chamber and keeper of carpets and upholstery" which Molière assumed in 1641. The benefits included only three months' work per annum for which he was paid 300 livres and also provided a number of lucrative contracts. However in June 1643, at 21, Molière abandoned this for his first love; a career on the stage. He partnered with the actress Madeleine Béjart, to found the Illustre Théâtre at a cost of 630 livres. Unfortunately despite their enthusiasm, effort and ambition the troupe went bankrupt in 1645. Molière and Madeleine now began again and spent the next dozen years touring the provincial circuit. His journey back to the sacred land of Parisian theatres was slow but by 1658 he performed in front of the King at the Louvre. From this point Molière both wrote and acted in a large number of productions that caused both outrage and applause. His many attacks on social conventions, the church, hypocrisy and other areas whilst also writing a large number of comedies, farces, tragicomedies, comédie-ballets are the stuff of legend. 'Tartuffe', 'The Misanthrope', 'The Miser' and 'The School for Wives' are but some of his classics. His death was as dramatic as his life. Molière suffered from pulmonary tuberculosis. One evening he collapsed on stage in a fit of coughing and haemorrhaging while performing in the last play he'd written, in which, ironically, he was playing the hypochondriac Argan, in 'The Imaginary Invalid'. Molière insisted on completing his performance. Afterwards he collapsed again with another, larger haemorrhage and was taken home. Priests were sent for to administer the last rites. Two priests refused to visit. A third arrived too late. On 17th February 1673, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, forever to be known as Molière, was pronounced dead in Paris. He was 51.

Moliere was the stage name used by Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (1622-73), the French playwright, actor and poet, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the French language and universal literature. His works include comedies, farces, tragi-comedies, comedie-ballets, and more. His plays have been translated into every major language and are performed more often at the Comedie Francaise than those of any other playwright. After 13 years as an itinerant actor which helped him polish his comic abilities he began writing, combining Commedia dell'arte elements with the more refined French comedy. Through the patronage of aristocrats including Louis XIV's brother, Philippe I, Duke of Orleans, Moliere secured a command performance before the King and was later granted the use of the theatre at the Palais-Royal, his plays finding great favour among Parisians. His troupe, given the title Troupe du Roi (The King's Troupe), was given a royal pension and Moliere became the official author of court entertainments. His major works include Le Medecin volant (The Flying Doctor), Les Precieuses ridicules (The Affected Young Ladies), L'ecole des femmes (The School for Wives), and Le Misanthrope ou L'Atrabilaire amoureux (The Misanthrope, or, The Cantankerous Lover). Les Femmes savant (The Learned Ladies) is a comedy in five acts first performed at the Theatre du Palais-Royal on 11 March 1672 with Molière acting the part of Chrysale. Written in verse in the original French, it is a satire on academic pretension, female education, and 'preciousness', and is one of Moliere's most popular comedies. This edition is a translation into English prose by Charles Heron Wall (1836-1905), who also provided the notes.

Written by the seventeenth-century French playwright Molière, this classic comedy of manners is a hilarious and thought-provoking satire on the intellectual pretensions of the French aristocracy. The play revolves around the efforts of a group of learned women to force their husbands and families to recognize their intellectual superiority, with predictably comic results. With its sharp wit and sparkling dialogue, Les Femmes Savantes is a timeless masterpiece of French literature. Les Femmes savantes (The Learned Ladies) is a comedy by Molière in five acts, written in verse. A satire on academic pretention, female education, and préciosité (French for preciousness), it was one of his most popular comedies. It premiered at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal on 11 March 1672.Two young people, Henriette and Clitandre, are in love, but in order to marry, they must overcome an obstacle: the attitude of Henriette's family. Her sensible father and uncle are in favour of the marriage; but unfortunately her father is under the thumb of his wife, Philaminte. And Philaminte, supported by Henriette's aunt and sister, wishes her to marry Trissotin, a "scholar" and mediocre poet with lofty aspirations, who has these three women completely in his thrall. For these three ladies are "learned"; their obsession in life is learning and culture of the most pretentious kind, and Trissotin is their special protégé and the fixture of their literary salon. The Learned Ladies" was the last-but-one of Molière's plays and the last of his great rhyming-couplet comedies. Its predecessors had used the artificiality of the style to add point and irony to some of Molière's most trenchant examinations of aspects of the human condition. For lighter-hearted satire, sending up specific behaviour rather than the general human condition, Molière tended to use prose. "The Learned Ladies" has the best of both worlds: it satirises a specific fad (intellectual pretension) but - perhaps because its subject requires an appropriately "high style" - is written in rhyming verse. Targeting cultural snobbery, "The Learned Ladies" mocks the fashion, current among upper-class ladies, for holding "salons" to discuss such "learned" matters as the arts, philosophy and science. The joke, to Molière's audience, was not merely intellectual snobbery, but that the snobs were women. This was an age when matters of the mind were, in theory, still the province of men; upper-class women were expected to be charming, witty, interested in the world and its doings, but not scholars. The majority of the aristocratic ladies in Molière's own audience probably took this view and shared the opinion of the men, that "learned ladies" and their gatherings were fools, fit targets for the pedants, charlatans and other confidence-tricksters who preyed on them. "The Learned Ladies" played for a couple of dozen performances (a successful "run" for court plays at the time) and attracted none of the hostility and scandal of Molière's more contentious works. This French-to-English translation is by A. R. Waller and is scrupulously accurate to Molière's meaning.
