If I died tomorrow will my child be okay? This is a question I find myself asking almost everyday. Food, clothing and shelter are not at stake. I simply wanted a means to communicate. Each day as my child grow; there are life's lessons that he will need to know. This is why I very carefully wrote Momma's Life Lessons. The more one knows the more one grows. As I was writing, I began to think about how I learned these lessons. Many of these lessons, I learned as a young adult myself, from my mother and other lessons, I learned from some other young adults going through some critical stage in their life. At this point, I began to realize that not only could my child benefit from this book but other young adults as well. There may be parents or other guardians that may not share with their children as much as they would like and this book given as a gift or maybe housed in a library or bookstore may be just what a child would like. This book will help communicate life's lessons whether it's shared with a child by an adult or whether a child just happens to stumble upon it on their own. Still, there will be many lessons our children must learn on their own.

It's been said that values are caught more than taught. When Polly Shivers was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, she quietly maintained, "Well, we're supposed to bloom where we are planted." Mama's words matched her actions. She knew that her six children would repeat what she did more than what she said. An orphan, adopted into her forever family as a toddler, Mama's life permeated gratefulness. Mama knew what loneliness felt like, and she invested in the lives of others, reaping great benefits. Snapshots of twelve of the many lessons learned from my Mama are encapsulated here, along with journal entries from both Mama and the author, Joan Walker Page, number five. Be inspired as you read the priceless pieces of this family's life, lovingly put together.

Did you ever think if you had known something when you were younger, it would have saved you trouble in life? Had you been told; you might have made better choices. That knowledge might have made you think a little more before you acted, recognize toxic people and situations a little sooner, and help you to love and protect yourself more fiercely. This book is about some of those things I wish I had been told when I was young, instead of having to learn them through experience. Would me knowing these things have changed the path I took in life? Maybe not...but then again maybe, just maybe they would have.

Henry wrote Life Lessons In The Mother's Tongue as a homage and thank you to his greatest teacher, his mother. The book illustrates how the lessons he learned from his mother and elders not only helped him to navigate difficult situations in his life, but to constanty seek improvement. This ethos drives Henry to identify new tools and techniques that improve his life. Life Lessons In The Mother's Tongue is a perfect synthesis of anecdotally shared African wisdom and contemporary techniques to manage mental health and wellbeing. At times harrowing but ultimately uplifting, Life Lessons In The Mother's Tongue illustrates a triumph of the human spirit in the face of contiued adversity with the underlying message that we are all capable of doing the same. It is also an acknowledgement that Africa is the mother of ALL of us and that truth, if acknowledged by more of us, creates family.
