The work of Carlo Crivelli (c.1435-c.1495), one of the most original artists of the Italian Renaissance, is well represented in the art museums of North America. Although much admired by collectors, artists, and designers in the 19th and early 20th centuries, he has until recently been largely written out of the history of early Renaissance art, is little known to the public, and outside of some rare instances in Italy, has never been the focus of a monographic exhibition. The book, accompanying an exhibition at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, will reevaluate Crivelli s provincial status, presenting him as an experimental artist who provided an alternative to the influential new models of modern painting associated with Florence. He was an artist who aimed to dazzle through a repertoire of spectacular pictorial effects that combined luxuriant ornamental display with bravura illusionism the latter entailing a sophisticated, witty, and sometimes unsettling play with the limits of frames and fictive space.

This is neither a manual claiming to be a popular summary nor a systematic treatment of the art of the wall poster. It is an original work, of vast scope, structured into independent essays organised along a cohesive timeline, from 1880 to the second half of the twentieth century, reflecting on various aspects of artistic advertising graphics in an interdisciplinary dimension and with an international perspective. From the establishment of the poster as an innovative form of large-circulation visual communication and from its emancipation from the painting aesthetics of the nineteenth century to the understanding of the influences of advertising on the Pop Art experiences of the 1960s, according to a logic of inverted relations. The constant points of reference show the relations not only with painting but also with graphic processing and design, publishing graphics, original prints and photography; in the background, there also is cinema, decorative arts and urban furnishing. Artists, schools, movements, trade magazines, the book industry, exhibitions and performances, business advertising, political and war propaganda, social topics: these are some of the subjects and phenomena that interact in the history of advertising languages, which have been framed here by the specialist expertise of six authors. There is also the recurrent emergence of the dialects around the instruments and purposes of advertising communication, between practice and experimentation, commercial requirements, professional training and creative demands.

For Voir la mer, Sophie Calle invited inhabitants of Istanbul, who often originated from central Turkey, to see the sea for the first time. "I took 15 people of all ages, from kids to one man in his 80s ... once we were safely by the sea, I instructed them to take away their hands and look at it. Then, when they were ready--for some it was five minutes and for others 15--they had to turn to me and let me look at those eyes that had just seen the sea." The project was eventually composed of 14 five-minute videos, made for Calle by Caroline Champetier. Each person is filmed from behind, eventually turning to face the camera, revealing the emotions the experience has evoked. How have we thought “the body”? How can we think it anew? The body of mortal creatures, the body politic, the body of letters and of laws, the “mystical body of Christ”—all these (and others) are incorporated in the word Corpus, the title and topic of Jean-Luc Nancy’s masterwork. Corpus is a work of literary force at once phenomenological, sociological, theological, and philosophical in its multiple orientations and approaches. In thirty-six brief sections, Nancy offers us at once an encyclopedia and a polemical program—reviewing classical takes on the “corpus” from Plato, Aristotle, and Saint Paul to Descartes, Hegel, Husserl, and Freud, while demonstrating that the mutations (technological, biological, and political) of our own culture have given rise to the need for a new understanding of the body. He not only tells the story of this cultural change but also explores the promise and responsibilities that such a new understanding entails. The long-awaited English translation is a bold, bravura rendering. To the title essay are added five closely related recent pieces—including a commentary by Antonia Birnbaum—dedicated in large part to the legacy of the “mind-body problem” formulated by Descartes and the challenge it poses to rethinking the ancient problems of the corpus.
