Edward Gibbon And Empire written by Rosamond McKitterick and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-07-18 with History categories.

This book examines Gibbon's interpretations of empire and the intellectual context in which he formulated them against a background of the eighteenth- and late twentieth-century knowledge of late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Gibbon's ideas of empire, his understanding of monarchy and the balance of power, his sources and working methods, the structure of the History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, his attitude towards the barbarians, the contrasting treatments of the eastern and western Empire, his appreciation of past civilizations and their material remains, his audience and their reactions - contemporary and Victorian - are considered in the light of the latest research on eighteenth-century intellectual history on the one hand and on late antiquity, Byzantium and the Middle Ages on the other. The book breaks new ground in taking the form of a dialogue between experts on the fields about which Gibbon himself wrote, and eighteenth-century intellectual historians.

The Myth Of 1648 written by Benno Teschke and has been published by Verso Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-05 with Political Science categories.

Winner of the 2003 Isaac and Tamara Deutscher Memorial Prize This book rejects a commonplace of European history: that the treaties of Westphalia not only closed the Thirty Years' War but also inaugurated a new international order driven by the interaction of territorial sovereign states. Benno Teschke, through this thorough and incisive critique, argues that this is not the case. Domestic 'social property relations' shaped international relations in continental Europe down to 1789 and even beyond. The dynastic monarchies that ruled during this time differed from their medieval predecessors in degree and form of personalization, but not in underlying dynamic. 1648, therefore, is a false caesura in the history of international relations. For real change we must wait until relatively recent times and the development of modern states and true capitalism. In effect, it's not until governments are run impersonally, with no function other than the exercise of its monopoly on violence, that modern international relations are born.

This study of the Spanish monarchy, bureaucracy and representative government under Charles V before and after the "comunero" revolt (1520-1521) demonstrates how the emperor and Castilian republics institutionalized management procedures that promoted accountability, advanced a meritocracy, and facilitated expansionism and domestic stability.

Intended for the professional academic and graduate student, this book is the first to utilize the methodology of a oeNew Streama legal scholarship in an extended critical a oeexegesisa of Hugo Grotiusa (TM) "De Indis" (c.1604-6). "De Indis" is predicated upon a two-fold discursive strategy: (i) investing a oeprivatea Trading Companies with a oepublica international legal personality, and (ii) collapsing the distinction between a oeprivatea and a oepublica warfare. Governing the operation of textual interpretation is "De Indis"a (TM) status as a republican treatise juridically legitimating an early modern Trans-National corporation (the VOC) that served as an agent of a a oeprimitivea system of global governance, the early Capitalist World-Economy. The application of New Stream scholarship reveals that the republican signature of "De Indis" consists of a discursive a oemicro-oscillationa between the a oethicka ontology of Late Scholasticism (a oeUtopiaa ) and the a oethina ontology of Civic Humanism (a oeApologya ) wholly appropriate to the governance requirements of the embryonic Modern World-System.
