Il mondo sommerso diventa una passione e comincia un percorso che lo porta a diventare istruttore, con l’obiettivo di insegnare alle persone ad andare sott’acqua in modo sicuro e consapevole, ma soprattutto tentare di trasmettere loro almeno una delle mille emozioni che il mare gli ha regalato. A un certo punto si dedica alla subacquea tecnica profonda, soprattutto al lago, e alle riprese subacquee, grazie alle quali conquista riconoscimenti in concorsi per videosub. Ha praticato per vent’anni subacquea, arrivando alle immersioni con l’uso dei circuiti chiusi (subacquea moderna).

Lo stato di crisi delle società occidentali sembra ormai irreversibile: nello spaesamento e nell’insicurezza del caos globale, Zygmunt Bauman è stato un faro insostituibile. Questo libro è il frutto di un decennale, intenso dialogo tra Bauman e Carlo Bordoni: un comune percorso intellettuale da cui è emersa l’esigenza di superare il concetto più noto del grande sociologo polacco, quello di «modernità liquida».La categoria della modernità liquida è ormai troppo vaga ed elusiva. Non basta più a interpretare la nostra epoca, in cui vengono meno le sicurezze economiche del sistema produzione-lavoro-consumo-consumismo, ma anche le tradizionali idee di massa, comunità, uguaglianza, classe e, soprattutto, progresso. Spazio e tempo si contraggono grazie alla rapidità delle comunicazioni, all’immediatezza delle informazioni, all’omologazione dei comportamenti umani, non più racchiusi entro i confini invalicabili degli Stati-nazione. Il disordine è avvertito in ogni parte del mondo, contemporaneamente. Per la prima volta non c’è un posto migliore in cui rifugiarsi: non c’è alternativa a un sistema globale che sta crollando.L’incertezza del futuro è dunque il tratto più caratteristico della nostra condizione, che si esprima sotto forma di resistenza, paura, egoismo o semplice senso di precarietà e impotenza. Da questo prolungato e sfaccettato stato di crisi – la fine della modernità, ma anche della modernità liquida – sorgerà una società radicalmente nuova, ancora sconosciuta. Nel frattempo, siamo sospesi in quello che Bordoni, sulla scorta di Gramsci, definisce «interregno»: il vecchio muore, ma il nuovo non riesce a nascere. A questa incertezza, però, corrisponde anche la possibilità di fare le scelte giuste: dopo l’interregno non ci aspetta una società già predefinita e connotata, ma solo quella, inedita, che avremo saputo costruire qui e ora, con le nostre umane forze.

If, as this search continues, it transpires that politics has little to offer, then what might social theory have to contribute to the imagination of these futures? Does social theory matter at all? What resources can it offer this project of rethinking the future? Johannes Klumpers Biotechnologies, such as genetic engineering, cloning and biodiversity, raise many legal and ethical concerns, so it is important that people understand these issues and feel able to express their opinions. This is why the European Commission has been, for a number of years, supporting actions to improve communication among scientists in these diverse areas. The project ‘Women in Biotechnology’ (WONBIT), financed under the 6th Framework programme of the European Commission, is an excellent example of what can be done to target opinion-formers such as scientists, economists and lawyers in bottom-up activities, and to encourage a debate on gender issues triggered by developments in the life sciences. WONBIT gave rise to a successful international conference highlighting the importance of adopting good practices and ethical considerations in parallel with the rapid pace of progress in biotechnology – from a woman’s point of view. In particular, the conference addressed women in decision-making positions in b- technology with specific reference to scientific excellence, social competencies and management qualities as well as issues relating to environment, society and the younger generation. But it did not stop there: a key part of the conference was dedicated to stimulating public debate among non-specialists, which has led to a number of recommen- tions to policy-makers on better communication in biotechnology, on taking better account of the gender aspects of research, and on involving more women in the decision-making process that surrounds developments in biotechnology.
