Monet never traveled to Japan, but surrounded himself with a large collection of Japanese woodblock prints. From as early as the 1870's, critics commented on the influence these works were having on Monet's Impressionism. Japanese art accompanied Monet throughout his life as an artist. Without it he would not be the 'Monet' we know. It affected not only his style and subject matter, but also the way he saw nature and how he conceived his relationship to nature. MONET & JAPAN shows how Japanese prints and paintings helped to shape Monet's art during six decades, influencing not only his style and subject matter, but the very way he saw the world around him.

"Japan and Paris demonstrates the deep cross-cultural nature of art in Japan from about 1880 to 1930. Illustrated with masterpieces from Japanese collections by Matisse, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Corot, Cezanne, and Monet, it explores the history of collecting Western art in Japan and its influence on Japanese modern art. In particular, it addresses the development of Western-style modernist impulses as Japan's early interest in the Barbizon School extended to include modes of expression such as Impressionism, Postimpressionism, Symbolism, Cubism, and Fauvism. In addition to showcasing works by some of the best-known French and European painters, works by Japanese artists who were instrumental in the introduction of Western modes of expression to Japan are included, such as Kojima Zenzaburo, Kume Keiichiro, Maeda Kanji, Mitsutani Kunishiro, and Fujita Tsuguharu."

Japanese art is of fundamental importance for the development of modern art in Europe. Nearly all of the great nineteenth-century masters--from Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh to Pierre Bonnard, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Édouard Vuillard--embraced the charm of Japanese pictorial motifs and stylistic devices, developing them in their own work. Even Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso expressed enduring interest in Japan well into the twentieth century. Monet, Gauguin, Van Gogh ... Japanese Inspirations explores the most fascinating chapters of French art in the second half of the nineteenth century, in the phenomenon known as Japonisme. The catalogue and the exhibition it accompanies focus on the period between 1860 and 1910, the heyday of the craze for Japanese art in France. Alongside paintings and prints by artists active in France such as Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet, the volume showcases an extensive selection of Japanese color woodcut prints by Utagawa Hiroshige, Katsushika Hokusai, Kitagawa Utamaro and others. Japanese artifacts are likewise juxtaposed with works by French artists such as Félix Bracquemond, Jean Carriès and Émile Gallé, inspiring a dialogue between works rarely considered in tandem. Featuring essays by well-known authors as well as younger scholars, this comprehensively illustrated catalogue sheds light on the most important aspects of this formative epoch and the productive exploration of Japan embarked upon by artists living and working in France.

Large-format illustrations of Impressionist masterpieces from collections in Japan demonstrate the love of Japanese artists and collectors for French impressionism"--Page 4 of cover.

Claude Monet This journal features a remastered version of Monet's Japanese Footbridge and the Water Lily Pool. The original oil painting was created in 1899. According to the National Gallery of Art, Monet moved his household to the rural community of Giverny, where he leased a house that he was able to purchase seven years later. In early 1893, he acquired a swampy area across the railroad tracks abutting his property and petitioned the village council for permission to divert a small stream into it. But it was only toward the end of that decade that he turned to the garden he had created there as a rich source of artistic inspiration. The image wraps around the journal.
