Natural gas has some positive macroeconomic implications for Nigeria since there is as much gas as there is oil in the country. Also, the overall dependence on oil will soon be reduced and there will be an increasing demand for gas. Oil currently accounts for over 90 percent of Nigeria's foreign exchange earnings; therefore, there is hope for increased revenue from natural gas. It has become important and appropriate for Nigeria to develop her vast natural gas reserves to serve her economy, strengthen regional cooperation, and meet expanding demand in the different world markets. This paper reviews global natural gas monetization technologies and projects, assesses Nigeria"s achievements in monetizing natural gas reserves, and offers future possibilities. The monetization technologies and projects reviewed are liquefied natural gas (LNG), gas-to-liquids (GTL), compressed natural gas (CNG), gas-to-power (gas-fired power generation), and gas-to-solid (gas hydrates). Nigeria's achievement in monetizing natural gas include the Nigeria LNG plant, Brass LNG plant, Escravos GTL plant, Bonny Non-Associated Gas plant, West Niger Delta LNG plant, Olokola LNG project, Bonny Island Gas and Power plant, Nigeria Gas Company, and some thermal power plants. Some of these projects have not reached operational stage; hence, gas utilization in Nigeria is still inadequate when compared to those of other oil and gas producing nations.Future possibilities of monetizing natural gas are suggested for Nigeria to serve her economy, have a steady and enviable electricity generation, contribute to global greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, and meet expanding energy and petrochemical demands in the world markets. These possibilities include geologic storage of natural gas (to minimize gas flaring and enhance oil recovery), improved gas-fired power generation, dimethyl ether (DME), and gas-to-ethylene syntheses to mention just a few.

Globally, there are significant quantities of natural gas reserves that lie economically or physically stranded from markets. Options to monetize such reserves include Gas to Liquids (GTL) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) technologies. GTL is a unique monetization option that brings natural gas products to crude oil markets. This technology is commercially immature, appears to have attractive market potential, requires substantial capital investments, and has uncertain operating costs and revenue generation. LNG is a more established monetization option. Project economics for the two technologies are reviewed, as well as literature evaluating such for either or both. Discounted cash flow models are studied for two project scenarios, and results are discussed and compared. The modeling effort seeks to inform the decision to invest in GTL or LNG for the monetization of a stranded gas reserve.

Problems with the extraction and sharing of oil wealth from the Niger Delta over the years made the quest to seek consensus solutions to monetize the deepwater gas resource a worthwhile challenge. This book is the distillation of a doctoral action research to find consensus solution to the policy conundrum among key stakeholders on monetizing deepwater gas reserves in the Niger Delta, Nigeria. The community people, government agencies and oil industry professionals are three key stakeholders whose perspectives on deepwater gas reserves monetization were obtained through questionnaire survey and focus group discussions. A systematic examination of thematic results from the different stakeholder focus groups presented some consensus on specific policy proposals and changes of law concerning deepwater gas deposits in Niger Delta.

A comprehensive review of the current status and challenges for natural gas and shale gas production, treatment and monetization technologies Natural Gas Processing from Midstream to Downstream presents an international perspective on the production and monetization of shale gas and natural gas. The authors review techno-economic assessments of the midstream and downstream natural gas processing technologies. Comprehensive in scope, the text offers insight into the current status and the challenges facing the advancement of the midstream natural gas treatments. Treatments covered include gas sweeting processes, sulfur recovery units, gas dehydration and natural gas pipeline transportation. The authors highlight the downstream processes including physical treatment and chemical conversion of both direct and indirect conversion. The book also contains an important overview of natural gas monetization processes and the potential for shale gas to play a role in the future of the energy market, specifically for the production of ultra-clean fuels and value-added chemicals. This vital resource: Provides fundamental chemical engineering aspects of natural gas technologies Covers topics related to upstream, midstream and downstream natural gas treatment and processing Contains well-integrated coverage of several technologies and processes for treatment and production of natural gas Highlights the economic factors and risks facing the monetization technologies Discusses supply chain, environmental and safety issues associated with the emerging shale gas industry Identifies future trends in educational and research opportunities, directions and emerging opportunities in natural gas monetization Includes contributions from leading researchers in academia and industry Written for Industrial scientists, academic researchers and government agencies working on developing and sustaining state-of-the-art technologies in gas and fuels production and processing, Natural Gas Processing from Midstream to Downstream provides a broad overview of the current status and challenges for natural gas production, treatment and monetization technologies.

"The proven natural gas reserves of the Alaska North Slope (ANS) have enormous potential as clean-burning energy resources, if they can be effectively and efficiently utilized. These gas resources, exceeding 35 trillion cubic feet (TCF), currently represent a significant proportion of the energy equivalence of proven ANS oil reserves. With ANS located far from potential markets, there is need to evaluate the prospective economics of promising technologies for monetization of these stranded gas reserves. The economics of the chemical conversion of natural gas to synthetic liquid fuels favored by recent advances in FT synthesis techniques, liquid fuel transportation for the Trans Alaskan Pipeline System (TAPS) operations, and increased demand for clean burning diesel fuels, was the main focus of this study. Economic evaluation using Internal Rate of Return (IRR) analysis, Payout Time and the Net Present Value (NPV) to access and compare the economic viability of 3-train and 4-train GTL Projects is performed. Monte-Carlo simulation using the Crystal Ball software was utilized to run sensitivity analysis, incorporating the probabilistic approach, which generated insightful scenarios on the project economics"--Leaf iii.
