An insufficient amount of measured data is available on actual indoor humidity levels in U.S. households, making it difficult to design durable homes. This research project has collected 1 full year of indoor temperature and humidity data for a sample of 60 homes across three different climate regions - the hot and humid Southeast (Zone 2), the cold Northeast (Zone 5), and the marine Northwest (Zone 4). This research was in direct support of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Inc. Standard 160, Criteria for Moisture-Control Design Analysis in Buildings. A research methodology was developed with assistance from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a subcontractor and member of Standing Standards Project Committee 160 that acted in an advisory role. The monitoring protocol involved three site visits to each home to perform tasks such as collecting basic house and equipment characteristics, installing data loggers, performing testing to quantify envelope leakage and duct leakage, and collecting data recorded by the loggers. Data compiled in the field tests were analyzed to identify the potential relationships between certain household characteristics and the measured internal humidity levels. This report presents significant findings from the study. Correlations between indoor moisture levels and climate, occupant density, and house characteristics are the focus of the results. Conclusions and recommendations for indoor moisture management or future research needs are also discussed.

Residential building codes and voluntary labeling programs are continually increasing the energy efficiency requirements of residential buildings. Improving a building's thermal enclosure and installing energy-efficient appliances and lighting can result in significant reductions in sensible cooling loads leading to smaller air conditioners and shorter cooling seasons. However due to fresh air ventilation requirements and internal gains, latent cooling loads are not reduced by the same proportion. Thus, it's becoming more challenging for conventional cooling equipment to control indoor humidity at part-load cooling conditions and using conventional cooling equipment in a non-conventional building poses the potential risk of high indoor humidity. The objective of this project was to investigate the impact the chosen design condition has on the calculated part-load cooling moisture load, and compare calculated moisture loads and the required dehumidification capacity to whole-building simulations. Procedures for sizing whole-house supplemental dehumidification equipment have yet to be formalized; however minor modifications to current Air-Conditioner Contractors of America (ACCA) Manual J load calculation procedures are appropriate for calculating residential part-load cooling moisture loads. Though ASHRAE 1% DP design conditions are commonly used to determine the dehumidification requirements for commercial buildings, an appropriate DP design condition for residential buildings has not been investigated. Two methods for sizing supplemental dehumidification equipment were developed and tested. The first method closely followed Manual J cooling load calculations; whereas the second method made more conservative assumptions impacting both sensible and latent loads.

This guide formulates design assumptions for moisture design analysis and criteria for acceptable performance. Ideally, a design analysis involves the determination of the probability of failure and treats all design parameters and loads as stochastic variables. However, sufficient data is often not available to make a full statistical treatment practical. Instead, where only limited data exist, a moisture design protocol must be based on a combination of statistical data and professional judgment. Another judgment involves the choice of an acceptable probability of the occurrence of damage. Although it is common to impose very stringent criteria for structural design because of safety concerns, moisture damage usually occurs over a long period of time and usually has less catastrophic, although sometimes costly, consequences. An international consensus has emerged that the analysis should be predicated on loads that will not be exceeded 90% of the time. This guide adopts this approach. In a moisture analysis for building envelope design, the choice of indoor environmental conditions is extremely important, especially for buildings in cold climates. This guide opts for a design indoor climate definition that is based on engineering principles, is independent of construction, and reflects the influence of ventilation and air-conditioning equipment and controls that may or may not be part of the building design. In buildings where indoor humidity and temperature are explicitly controlled, the building envelope performance should be evaluated with the intended indoor design conditions. In residential buildings, indoor humidity is rarely explicitly controlled, so default design assumptions are needed for these buildings. In general, the methodology outlined in this guide encourages designers to use their own design parameter values if they are known and part of the design. If they are unknown or not included in the design, the methodology outlined in this guide provides default values for those loads and parameters.

Indoor relative humidity (RH) is commonly used to characterize the indoor environment for heat-air-moisture (HAM) simulations, chamber studies, analysis of monitoring data, or test hut studies of buildings without recognition that indoor RH and condensation potential depend on concurrent outdoor temperature and RH. This can lead to the use of unrealistic boundary conditions for HAM simulations and test programs, which may result in misleading conclusions. In buildings operating without mechanical dehumidification, the indoor air moisture level (vapor pressure) is directly related to the outdoor vapor pressure, moisture sources in the space, and the level of ventilation. Mathematics suggests that one can expect buildings with similar operation, occupancy, and construction, but affected by different weather conditions, to have a similar difference between indoor and outdoor vapor pressures. This paper provides a foundation for selecting appropriate and realistic boundary conditions for the design of residential buildings that are based on vapor pressure difference with the aim to eliminate any significant bias for a particular climate. The paper will present the following: (1) Discussion of current standards that provide some guidance to selecting appropriate indoor moisture levels based on vapor pressure difference; (2) Moisture balance equations will be used to show the impact of ventilation and moisture generation rates on the vapor pressure difference; (3) Monitoring data for six multi-unit residential buildings in two Canadian climates (Toronto and Vancouver) showing the relationship between the outdoor temperatures and vapor pressure difference; (4) Analysis of seasonal indoor moisture conditions and their impact on HAM modeling based on assumed indoor RH and conditions derived by a constant vapor pressure difference; and (5) Exploration of the concept that vapor pressure difference and indoor RH are limited by moisture removal on windows.
