Excerpt from Monographia Festucarum Europaearum Die Aufmerksamkeit der Phytographen unserer Tage hat sich immer mehr gewissen Ptianzen-Gattungen zugewendet, welche durch ihren Reichtlmm an Formen jeglichen Grades der Verschiedenheit einerseits den Scharfsinn des unterscheidenden und ordnenden Geistes herausfordern, andererseits Gelegenheit bieten, den Process der Artbildung in allen seinen Stadien zu verfolgen, Gruppen genetisch verknupfter Formen als solche zu erkennen oder doch mit Wahrscheinlichkeit. zu muthmaassen und dadnrch Bausteine beizutragen zu dem Aufbau der Phytographie der Zukunft, welche in der Darlegung der Verwandtschaftsverhaltnisse, gegrundet auf die erkannte Abstammung der Formen, gipfeln soll. So erfreuen sich heute die Gattungen Rubus, Rosa, Hieracium einer Anzahl ausgezeichneter und fleissiger Bearbeiter. Die Gattung Festuca, obwohl an Formenreichthum hinter den drei genannten zuruckstehend, bietet dennoch in einigen Sectionen derselben reichliches Material zu ahnlichen Studien. Ich habe es daher unternommen, die Formen derselben einer eingehenden Analyse zu unterwerfen, durch Aufsuchung neuer Gesichtspunkte und neuer Charaktere die Unterscheidung derselben sicherer zu gestalten und fur die Beurtheilung ihrer gegenseitigen Verwandtschaft eine festere Grundlage zu gewinnen. Im Verfolg dieser vor etwa 5 Jahren begonnenen Arbeit haben sich mir immer neue und weitere Einblicke in das Wesen der pflanzlichen Arten uberhaupt eroffnet, und es moge mir deshalb gestattet sein, meine Ansichten, welche sich an den vorliegenden Studien entwickelten, in einem eigenen Abschnitte zum Ausdrucke zu bringen.
