C'est dans cette cette Amérique-là qu'à Providence, dans sa chambre du 10 Barnes Street, Lovecraft le solitaire va écrire ses plus grandes oeuvres. «Montagnes de la folie»: une première rédaction manuscrite de 80 pages, biffurée, raturée, surchargée, écrite du 24 février au 22 mars 1931, et qui va devenir, les deux mois suivants, un dactylogramme de 115 pages. Ce texte exceptionnel, qu'on ne peut lire sans frissonner, un des plus grands classiques de la littérature fantastique de tous les temps, et un des plus longs de Lovecraft, sera pourtant refusé par tous ses éditeurs, dont le principal, le magazine «Weird Tales», et ne sera publié que 5 ans plus tard, quelques mois avant sa mort (en 1937, à 46 ans), dans une version tronquée et charcutée. C'est depuis quelques années seulement qu'existe un texte fiable et complet des «Montagnes de la folie», en voici la première traduction française.
