Under this grant, three main categories of research was conducted, all related to the correlation problem in Theoretical physics that arises from Many-Body interactions in Quantum Physics or from the effects of Multiple Scattering on Coherence. We have studied the Heisenberg Ferromagnet (HF) both in its classical and quantum versions. New details were obtained in the finite-size scaling relations of the HF that are tied to the issue of spontaneous symmetry breaking and the formation of Goldstone massless bosons-this was carried out using the celebrated Monte Carlo formalism on the classical HF. For the calculation of the Partition Function (PF) of the Quantum form of the HF. we have derived a new Theorem we call A Reduction Theorem' which substantially reduces the number of matrix elements that contribute to the PF The Theorem is valid for any number of quantum HF spins. In particular we have also obtained closed analytical/algebraic expressions of the Partition Function of up to four Quantum Heisenberg Spins. This result can be applied to any number of spins on any finite lattice in an approximation scheme that is still being explored. In essence, both the classical and quantum methods are needed to resolve some outstanding issues regarding the critical exponents of the HF. The finite-size scaling relations are also relevant to the nanotechnology driven issues related to nano-sized magnetism. The correlation problem also arises in the case of electron correlations in Condensed Matter when the bonding between atoms shows a strong redistribution of bonding orbitals upon condensation and the insertion of "impurity" atoms into the system, such as the insertion of Hydrogen into Nickel Aluminides. This we also have studied and made a contribution to via our earlier work on band structure theory where we showed clearly that "the Full Potential" in the Wigner-Seitz Cell must be taken into account for correct prediction of materials properties.

My staff research on dissipative Hamiltonian systems has evolved from Quantum Optics into three areas over the past three years, exemplifying the type coherent and incoherent processes which when merged lead to dissipative relaxation: (1) High precision scaling and critical exponent relations were derived for the Heisenberg Ferromagnet which show new details that challenge existing theories; (2) Super-enhanced Backscattering of radiation was observed and explained as due to Fabry-Perot type multi-pass multiple scattering from rough thin films where coherency is broken by the spatial stochasticity of the medium leading to photon localization and the ensuing enhancement. Next we need to take higher order correlations into account to include memory effects akin to hysteresis that we studied in Quantum Optics; (3) Showed the necessity of taking the full potential (as opposed to muffin-tin potentials which are partials of the full potential) in the Wigner-Seitz cells of crystalline solids for the calculation of electronic energy levels, including the role of impurities such as sulfur and boron, and therefrom deriving microscopic stress-strain tonsorial relations to study crack propagation-embrittlement problems at the level of details of bonding orbitals. Next Molecular Dynamics will be performed to show effects of temperature on this micromechanical dynamics.

In the seven years since this volume first appeared. there has been an enormous expansion of the range of problems to which Monte Carlo computer simulation methods have been applied. This fact has already led to the addition of a companion volume ("Applications of the Monte Carlo Method in Statistical Physics", Topics in Current Physics. Vol . 36), edited in 1984, to this book. But the field continues to develop further; rapid progress is being made with respect to the implementation of Monte Carlo algorithms, the construction of special-purpose computers dedicated to exe cute Monte Carlo programs, and new methods to analyze the "data" generated by these programs. Brief descriptions of these and other developments, together with numerous addi tional references, are included in a new chapter , "Recent Trends in Monte Carlo Simulations" , which has been written for this second edition. Typographical correc tions have been made and fuller references given where appropriate, but otherwise the layout and contents of the other chapters are left unchanged. Thus this book, together with its companion volume mentioned above, gives a fairly complete and up to-date review of the field. It is hoped that the reduced price of this paperback edition will make it accessible to a wide range of scientists and students in the fields to which it is relevant: theoretical phYSics and physical chemistry , con densed-matter physics and materials science, computational physics and applied mathematics, etc.

Monte Carlo methods have been very prominent in computer simulation of various systems in physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science. This book focuses on the discussion and path-integral quantum Monte Carlo methods in many-body physics and provides a concise but complete introduction to the Metropolis algorithm and its applications in these two techniques. To explore the schemes in clarity, several quantum many-body systems are analysed and studied in detail. The book includes exercises to help digest the materials covered. It can be used as a tutorial to learn the discussion and path-integral Monte Carlo or a recipe for developing new research in the reader's own area. Two complete Java programs, one for the discussion Monte Carlo of 4^He clusters on a graphite surface and the other for the path-integral Monte Carlo of cold atoms in a potential trap, are ready for download and adoption.

Speech by Toyosaburo Taniguchi Dr. Kubo, Chairman, Distinguished Guests, and Friends, I am very happy, pleased and honored to be here this evening with so many distinguished guests, friends, and scholars from within this country and from different parts of the world. The Taniguchi Foundation wishes to extend a warm and sincere welcome to the many participants of the Ninth International Symposium on the Theory of Condensed Matter, which se ries was inaugurated eight years ago through the strenuous efforts of Dr. Ryogo Kubo, who is gracing us today with his presence. We are deeply indebted to Dr. Kubo, Dr. Suzuki, and their associates, who havE' spent an enormous amount of time and effort to make this particular symposium possible. We are convinced that the foundation should not be considered as what makes our symposium a success. The success is entirely due, I feel, to the continuous efforts of the Organizing Committee and of all those who have lent their support to this program. In this sense, your words of praise about the symposium, if any, should be directed to all of them. So far, I have met in person a total of 62 participants in this Division from 12 countries: Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Ireland, Israel, Rumania, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America, with 133 participants from Japan. Those friends I have been privileged to make, I shall always treasure.

This book reviews recent developments of quantum Monte Carlo methods and some remarkable applications to interacting quantum spin systems and strongly correlated electron systems. It contains twenty-two papers by thirty authors. Some of the features are as follows. The first paper gives the foundations of the standard quantum Monte Carlo method, including some recent results on higher-order decompositions of exponential operators and ordered exponentials. The second paper presents a general review of quantum Monte Carlo methods used in the present book. One of the most challenging problems in the field of quantum Monte Carlo techniques, the negative-sign problem, is also discussed and new methods proposed to partially overcome it. In addition, low-dimensional quantum spin systems are studied. Some interesting applications of quantum Monte Carlo methods to fermion systems are also presented to investigate the role of strong correlations and fluctuations of electrons and to clarify the mechanism of high-c superconductivity. Not only thermal properties but also quantum-mechanical ground-state properties have been studied by the projection technique using auxiliary fields. Further, the Haldane gap is confirmed by numerical calculations. Active researchers in the forefront of condensed matter physics as well as young graduate students who want to start learning the quantum Monte Carlo methods will find this book useful.
