This book proposes, for the first time, an in-depth analysis of the Philosophie sociale, published in Paris in 1793 by Moses Dobruska (1753-1794). Dobruska was a businessman, scholar, and social philosopher, born into a Jewish family in Moravia, who converted to Catholicism, gained wide recognition at the Habsburg court in Vienna, and then emigrated to France to join the French Revolution. Dobruska, who took on the name Junius Frey during his Parisian sojourn, barely survived his book. Accused of conspiring on behalf of foreign powers, he was guillotined on April 5, 1794, at the height of The Terror, on the same day as Georges Jacques Danton. From Dobruska's ideas, which were widely used between the late eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth century without attribution to their author, emerge some of the key concepts of the social sciences as we know them today. An enthusiastic and unfortunate revolutionary and sometimes a brilliant theorist, Moses Dobruska deserves a role of his own in the history of sociology. In the globalized, postmodern world, the production of encounters and crashes between dissimilar cultures, ways of life, and systems of values has drastically increased in number. More and more frequently, they originate harsh conflicts, exhibiting the existence of alternative and apparently incompatible ways of living and thinking – culturally, religiously, economically and politically speaking. In this context, words as tolerance and intolerance have been put at the heart of the political debate. However, what is the real meaning of these political concepts? Why did they originate and how did the developed over time? Do they still represent a valid resource for comprehending our current societies and dealing with them? Through the different voices of several scholars in the humanities, this book traces the history of tolerance since the wars of religion to the contemporary age, combining the historical reconstruction with a theoretical and critical analysis of the idea and practice of tolerance in different epochs and places. The obstacle course depicted here reveals the constitutive fragility of this concept that, however, cannot be totally dismissed from our political vocabulary.

This book argues that the effective protection of fundamental rights in a contemporary, multicultural society requires not only tolerance and respect for others, but also an ethics of reciprocity and a pursuit of dialogue between different cultures of human rights. Nowadays, all cultures tend to claim an equitable arrangement that can be articulated in the terms of fundamental rights and in the multicultural organization of the State. Starting from the premise that every culture is and always was intercultural, this book elaborates a new, and more fundamentally, pluralist view of the relationship between rights and cultural identity. No culture is pure; from the perspective of an irreducible cultural contamination, this book argues, it is possible to formulate constitutional idea of diversity that is properly intercultural. This concept of intercultural constitutionalism is not, then, based on abstract principles, but nor is it bound to any particular cultural norm. Rather, intercultural constitutionalism allows the interpretation of rights, rules and legal principles, which are established in different contexts.

Fin dagli anni giovanili, in cui Voltaire si dedicava alla composizione del poema epico La Henriade, consacrato alla figura esemplare di Enrico IV, la storia fu sempre per lui materia di riflessione, tanto sul passato quanto sul presente. Se nel 1745 Voltaire ottenne la prestigiosa carica di “storiografo di Francia”, che lo costrinse per alcuni anni a svolgere la funzione di storico ufficiale di Luigi XV, è grazie alla sua opera di storico che la storia ha cessato di essere opus rhetoricum o erudizione antiquaria, per diventare uno strumento funzionale alla lotta per la diffusione dei lumi della ragione. «Ciò che solitamente manca a coloro che compilano la storia è lo spirito filosofico: la maggior parte, invece di discutere di fatti con degli uomini, racconta favole a dei bambini», Voltaire lamentava nelle Osservazioni sulla storia. La sua immensa opera storica, che abbraccia le civiltà più remote nel tempo e nello spazio fino alla situazione politica e militare degli anni a lui contemporanei, che sono quelli della Guerra dei Sette Anni, ha provveduto a conferire un nuovo significato e una nuova forza critica al vecchio adagio della historia magistra vitae: alla storia, e in primo luogo a quella che egli studia ed espone nelle proprie opere, Voltaire chiede di essere “utile”, ovvero una storia che sia capace di farci «conoscere i nostri doveri e i nostri diritti, senza avere la pretesa di insegnarceli», come scrive, senza mezzi termini, nel Dizionario filosofico.

Un territorio dominato da un castello, che ne diventa fulcro e generatore di trasformazioni sia per il paesaggio circostante, sia per l’abitato che si adagia attorno alle sue mura. Questa la logica, sinteticamente espressa, secondo la quale il castello di Govone, durante i secoli, ha saputo incidere e creare un sistema complesso, che ha condotto al suo riconoscimento come patrimonio UNESCO, parte del sito seriale delle Residenze Sabaude del Piemonte. Le sue molteplici vicende – prima luogo fortificato, successivamente residenza dei conti Solaro di Govone, poi acquistato dai Savoia e infine di proprietà del Comune di Govone – hanno originato una frammentazione nella conservazione dei documenti, dispersi in molti archivi, talvolta non inventariati o catalogati in sezioni di difficile individuazione, generando spesso una ricostruzione parziale e non esaustiva delle fasi di cantiere della fabbrica del castello, dei giardini e delle sue pertinenze. Questo volume tenta di raccogliere le informazioni fino a ora note, integrandole grazie all’individuazione di documentazione inedita e attraverso la conoscenza materiale e diretta raccolta nel contesto dei cantieri di restauro degli ultimi anni, per consegnare alla comunità scientifica uno strumento ampio, seppur ancora non esaustivo, per addentrarsi nella storia di un edificio che ha visto le sue mura attraversate dalle logiche di corte, da filosofi, architetti, pittori, artigiani, giardinieri, fino agli attuali fruitori, in un intreccio di relazioni che pochi altri luoghi possono vantare.

La ricerca sottolinea che la Staatslehere di Theodor Mommsen è stata sottoposta a larga revisione critica, ma anche che permangono alcune zone d’ombra, la cui consistenza ha impedito di approfondire i rapporti fra i vari ‘attori’ della governance di Roma in età repubblicana e la più incisiva lettura di quest’ultima nei termini di un ‘governo misto’. La ricerca approfondisce i due aspetti, concludendo che il riferimento al governo misto risulta effettivamente utile per descrivere l’organizzazione politica di Roma: però, nel senso che essa corrispose a un complesso di sistemi di governo, autonomi e concorrenti, la cui dialettica trovava un punto di equilibrio nella ‘virtù civica’. Entro questa prospettiva la ricerca esplora le tracce del governo misto romano nella modernità, analizzando se e come la sua percezione consenta di meglio precisare lo sviluppo del repubblicanesimo americano.
