Whether you are a parent, caretaker or educator, you are concerned for the well-being of the young children in your care. The exciting and fascinating time from ages 2-6 marks an amazing period of changes and milestones reached. Children change from toddling, unstable, barely communicative little ones into running, jumping, climbing and expressive beings. Read on your PC, Mac, smart phone, tablet or Kindle device Through this book, Esther takes you through the significance of Montessori and explains in detail the uniqueness in the Montessori technique and why it may best compliment to the uniqueness of your own child. The world of Montessori education is one in which the child leads their own experience, gently guided by an observant parent or educator. The Montessori method, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori in 1907, has become an effective and cherished lifestyle, and method of education, for children of all ages across the globe. Dr. Montessori recognized the natural rhythms in the learning habits of young children while she was focusing on how educational techniques could be improved for children with educational and developmental disabilities. As you can see, so much of Montessori is about respect for the mind and spirit of the child. As a parent, no one is more capable of loving, respecting and honoring your child than you are. You are the perfect Montessori educator for your child. This book provides some direction for those wishing to teach the important skills of self-care. Each of the tasks outlined here increase the child's sense of independence, and through this, her confidence. Though activities focusing on learning to dress, feed and manage hygiene may seem mundane to us adults, for children, mastering these skills is a ticket to freedom. Imagine what it would be like to need to ask for help every time you wanted a glass of water or to put your shoes on. You would be dependent on another person's availability constantly!Remember that each child is unique. While some two-year-olds are quick to learn to use the potty, other children aren't ready until they are nearly three. Some children may prefer food related activities to dressing activities. Notice the areas where your child seems most engaged and focus on these topics first. Here is a preview of what you will learn... It is a well known fact that the vast majority of children learn the alphabet by rote. In other words they simply repeat the letters and learn them by repetition. The ABC song is probably the best example of this misguided conventional wisdom. The same applies to how most children learn the numbers 1 – 10. Since the alphabet and the number system are the most fundamental building blocks to all future language and mathematical learning in a child’s life… why is it that we do not allow the child to learn it in a way that aids comprehension, not just memorisation by repetition. In a “concrete” way where they will literally understand the difference between “1” and “2”, or “a” and “b”. Think about it, how is a child meant to comprehend what “2” actually means when all they have heard is someone say “2” and they have simply repeated it, much to the satisfaction of the doting parent or teacher. It is this very logic that is often the catalyst for “blocks” and learning difficulties with Maths and other subject areas in later years. By contrast, one of the benefits of using the Montessori Method, for teaching the alphabet and numbers, is because she stresses how important it is to “internalise” a concrete concept first before building on that.

From the preface by Deborah Meier: "We have a long way to go to make John Holt's dream available to all children. But his books make it possible and easier for many of us to join him in the journey." In this enduring classic, rich with deep, original insight into the nature of early learning, John Holt was the first to make clear that, for small children, "learning is as natural as breathing." In his delightful book he observes how children actually learn to talk, to read, to count, and to reason, and how, as adults, we can best encourage these natural abilities in our children.
