Herein you will find eighteen tales of MOONSHINE and CLOVER. Tales like THE PRINCE WITH THE NINE SORROWS, A CAPFUL OF MOONSHINE, ROCKING-HORSE LAND, JAPONEL, GAMMELYN THE DRESSMAKER and many more which will keep even the youngest minds occupied for hours. Here you will find stories of fairies, Kings and Queens, Princes and Princesses, promises made and promises broken and the consequences thereof teaching children vital morals. There are also stories of majic, its use and misuse, as well as attempts at deceipt and deception which all come to naught when the deceiver is found out, as they always are in these stories. There are stories of rocking-horses which, at night, turn into real horses taking their young charges on nocturnal adventures only to have to dash home before sunrise when the horse is due to return to it’s original state and return their young riders safely to bed where they must be found tucked up and safe and sound. These eighteen stories have been extracted from four editions by Laurence Housman, originally published between 1894 and 1904, but which are now out of print. The four editions are : A Farm in Fairyland, The House of Joy, The Field of Clover and The Blue Moon. The sixteen original woodcuts by Clemence Housman may seem old-fashioned by today’s standards, but are in keeping with the age of the book. 33% of the net profit from the sale of this book will be donated to OLIVER’S HOUSE, a non profit organisation in Benoni, South Africa focusing on childcare and education for the underprivileged.

Terry Brooks. David Eddings. George R. R. Martin. Robin Hobb. The top names in modern fantasy all acknowledge J. R. R. Tolkien as their role model, the author whose work inspired them to create their own epics. But what writers influenced Tolkien himself? Here, internationally recognized Tolkien expert Douglas A. Anderson has gathered the fiction of authors who sparked Tolkien’s imagination in a collection destined to become a classic in its own right. Andrew Lang’s romantic swashbuckler, “The Story of Sigurd,” features magic rings, an enchanted sword, and a brave hero loved by two beautiful women— and cursed by a ferocious dragon. Tolkien read E. A. Wyke-Smith’s “The Marvelous Land of Snergs” to his children, delighting in these charming tales of a pixieish people “only slightly taller than the average table.” Also appearing in this collection is a never-before-published gem by David Lindsay, author of Voyage to Arcturus, a novel which Tolkien praised highly both as a thriller and as a work of philosophy, religion, and morals. In stories packed with magical journeys, conflicted heroes, and terrible beasts, this extraordinary volume is one that no fan of fantasy or Tolkien should be without. These tales just might inspire a new generation of creative writers. Tales Before Tolkien: 22 Magical Stories “The Elves” by Ludwig Tieck “The Golden Key” by George Macdonald “Puss-Cat Mew” by E. H. Knatchbull-Hugessen “The Griffin and the Minor Canon” by Frank R. Stockton “The Demon Pope” by Richard Garnett “The Story of Sigurd” by Andrew Lang “The Folk of the Mountain Door” by William Morris “Black Heart and White Heart” by H. Rider Haggard “The Dragon Tamers” by E. Nesbit “The Far Islands” by John Buchan “The Drawn Arrow” by Clemence Housman “The Enchanted Buffalo” by L. Frank Baum “Chu-bu and Sheemish” by Lord Dunsany “The Baumhoff Explosive” by William Hope Hodgson “The Regent of the North” by Kenneth Morris “The Coming of the Terror” by Arthur Machen “The Elf Trap” by Francis Stevens “The Thin Queen of Elfhame” by James Branch Cabell “The Woman of the Wood” by A. The A To Z Of Fantasy Literature written by Brian Stableford and has been published by Scarecrow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-08-13 with Literary Criticism categories.

Once upon a time all literature was fantasy, set in a mythical past when magic existed, animals talked, and the gods took an active hand in earthly affairs. As the mythical past was displaced in Western estimation by the historical past and novelists became increasingly preoccupied with the present, fantasy was temporarily marginalized until the late 20th century, when it enjoyed a spectacular resurgence in every stratum of the literary marketplace. Stableford provides an invaluable guide to this sequence of events and to the current state of the field. The chronology tracks the evolution of fantasy from the origins of literature to the 21st century. The introduction explains the nature of the impulses creating and shaping fantasy literature, the problems of its definition and the reasons for its changing historical fortunes. The dictionary includes cross-referenced entries on more than 700 authors, ranging across the entire historical spectrum, while more than 200 other entries describe the fantasy subgenres, key images in fantasy literature, technical terms used in fantasy criticism, and the intimately convoluted relationship between literary fantasies, scholarly fantasies, and lifestyle fantasies. The book concludes with an extensive bibliography that ranges from general textbooks and specialized accounts of the history and scholarship of fantasy literature, through bibliographies and accounts of the fantasy literature of different nations, to individual author studies and useful websites.
