Einleitung Wie kaum ein anderer Philosoph hat Arnold Gehlen die deutsche Nachkriegskontroverse vom Standpunkt des Institutionalismus geprägt und es gebührt ihm der Verdienst einer detaillierten, sozio- anthropologisch fundierten Kritik der Zeitgesinnung. Er ist jedoch ebenfalls für die Humanitarismusdebatte des 20. Jahrhunderts, innerhalb derer er der Ausbreitung einer globalen, menschenfreundlichen Massenmoral zutiefst kritisch gegenüberstand, von Bedeutung. In seinen Augen steht der Humanitarismus in einem destruktiven Verhältnis zu Institutionen, allen voran dem Staat. Da es sich gemäß Gehlen bei diesen Institutionen für den instinktreduzierten, mängelbehafteten und effektgeladenen Menschen um lebensnotwendige Regelmuster handelte, hätte eine umgreifende „Moralhypertrophie“ fatale Auswirkungen. Sie ließe politische Tugenden verkümmern, sprenge die Grenzen der nationalen Identifikation, und zerstöre den Staat sowohl als ideologisches als auch institutionelles Konstrukt. Ohne aber das ausführliche ethische Programm, das hinter dieser umstrittenen und vieldiskutierten Ansicht steht zu kennen, wird man dem Philosophen Arnold Gehlen nicht gerecht. Die Monographie „Moral und Hypermoral. Eine pluralistische Ethik“ muss als wesentliche Ergänzung zu seinem Hauptwerk „Der Mensch. Seine Natur und seine Stellung in der Welt“ verstanden werden. Es soll im Folgenden untersucht werden, wie die Humanitarismuskritik in diesem Buch darzustellen und kritisch zu durchleuchten ist. Zudem wird der Versuch unternommen, die Argumentationsstruktur des Autors zu verdeutlichen und die verschiedenen Ebenen seiner Beweisführung aufzuzeigen. Dafür muss ebenso die Gehlensche Genealogie einer pluralistischen Ethik und deren Aufteilung in verschiedene Verhaltensregulationen skizziert werden, denn dies muss als seine gedankliche Voraussetzung für die Kritik am humanitaristischen Ethos verstanden werden. Am Schluss steht eine kritische Zusammenfassung, welche die Kernelemente der Gehlenschen Humanitarismuskritik herausstellen und von einem ethischen als auch politikphilosophischen Standpunkt auf ihre Schlüssigkeit und ihren Gehalt überprüfen soll. The need for a global ethics has its origin in the human situation as such (i.e. in the fact of hominisation that has dismissed us from the natural security of animal instincts and thrown us into the state of freedom) and especially in the present situation of humankind that is characterised by an extreme increase of external challenges to our co-responsability, brought about by the results of natural science, technology, politics and economy, and - as it appears - lacking internal resources of ethical reason. The present book tries to show that the transcentendal-pragmatic approach to discourse ethics can reconstruct the genesis of this situation and provide a rational response to the external challenges to and the internal deficits of global ethics.

The subject of personal and moral identity is at the centre of interest, not only of academic research within disciplines such as philosophy and psychology, but also of everyday thinking. This is why the Neth erlands School for Research in Practical Philosophy and the Institute for Ethics of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam took the initiative to bring together scholars from various disciplines, interested in the subject. The expert-seminar on 'Personal and Moral Identity' took place from 12-14 January 1999. Financial contributions from the Vrije Universiteit, the Dutch Scientific Organisation (NWO) and the Royal Dutch Academy for the Sciences (KNA W) made the event possible. Today, churches, political parties, trade unions, and even national sports teams are no guarantee of social solidarity. At a time when these traditional institutions of social cohesion seem increasingly ill-equipped to defend against the disintegration of sociability, K. Ludwig Pfeiffer encourages us to reflect on the cultural and literary history of social gatherings—from the ancient Athenian symposium to its successor forms throughout Western history. From medieval troubadours to Parisian salons and beyond, Pfeiffer conceptualizes the symposium as an institution of sociability with a central societal function. As such he reinforces a programmatic theoretical move in the sociology of Georg Simmel and builds on theories of social interaction and communication characterized by Max Weber, George Herbert Mead, Jürgen Habermas, Niklas Luhmann, and others. To make his argument, Pfeiffer draws on the work of a range of writers, including Dr. Samuel Johnson and Diderot, Virginia Woolf and Marcel Proust, Dorothy Sayers, Joseph Conrad, and Stieg Larsson. Ultimately, Pfeiffer concludes that if modern societies do not find ways of reinstating elements of the Athenian symposium, especially those relating to its ritualized ease, decency and style of interaction, they will have to cope with increasing violence and decreasing social cohesion.
