The fourth volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress “The Many Languages of Comparative Literature” includes articles that study thematic and formal elements of literary texts. Although the question of prioritizing either the level of content or that of form has often provoked controversies, most contributions here treat them as internally connected. While theoretical considerations inform many of the readings, the main interest of most articles can be described as rhetorical (in the widest sense) – given that the ancient discipline of rhetoric did not only include the study of rhetorical figures and tropes such as metaphor, irony, or satire, but also that of topoi, which were originally viewed as the ‘places’ where certain arguments could be found, but later came to represent the arguments or intellectual themes themselves. Another feature shared by most of the articles is the tendency of ‘undeclared thematology’, which not only reflects the persistence of the charge of positivism, but also shows that most scholars prefer to locate themselves within more specific, often interdisciplinary fields of literary study. In this sense, this volume does not only prove the ongoing relevance of traditional fields such as rhetoric and thematology, but provides contributions to currently flourishing research areas, among them literary multilingualism, literature and emotions, and ecocriticism.

Around 1800, print culture became a particularly rich source for metaphors about thinking as well as writing, nowhere more so than in the German tradition of Dichter und Denker. Goethe, Jean Paul, and Hegel (among many others) used the preface in order to reflect on the problems of writing itself, and its interpretation. If Sterne teaches us that a material book enables mind games as much as it gives expression to them, the Germans made these games more theoretical still. Weaving in authors from Antiquity to Agamben, Williams shows how European–and, above all, German–Romanticism was a watershed in the history of the preface. The playful, paradoxical strategies that Romantic writers invented are later played out in continental philosophy, and in post-Structuralist literature. The preface is a prompt for playful thinking with texts, as much as it is conventionally the prosaic product of such an exercise. Published by Bucknell University Press. Im Zeitraum um 1800 ist ein ausgeprägtes anthropologisches Interesse europäischer Autoren an fremden Kulturen zu konstatieren. Dieses Interesse manifestiert sich nicht allein in den damals zahlreich erscheinenden Reiseberichten und in der Entstehung akademischer Disziplinen wie ‚Menschheitsgeschichte‘ und ‚physische Geographie‘, sondern greift auf das Gebiet der fiktionalen Literatur und der Ästhetik über. Etliche zeitgenössische Dramen, Erzähltexte und Gedichte inszenieren kulturelle Differenz, und auch innerhalb der parallel dazu entwickelten ästhetischen Theorien spielt die Auseinandersetzung mit außereuropäischen Kunst- und Schönheitsvorstellungen eine eminente Rolle. In exemplarischen Analysen untersuchen die hier versammelten Beiträge vor allem mit Blick auf den deutschsprachigen Bereich, welche literarische Produktivität und ästhetische Innovationskraft sich aus der Beschäftigung mit völkerkundlich-anthropologischen Phänomenen ergab und inwieweit umgekehrt Literatur und Ästhetik einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Menschenkunde von der Aufklärung bis zur Romantik leisteten.
