Este libro se inserta en un campo novísimo de la investigación sobre familias en Colombia: mitos y secretos familiares. Las investigadores presentan el producto de una indagación bibliográfica exhaustiva que incluye de teorías como el psicoanálisis, la terapia familiar, la psicología, la sociología y la antropología, pasando por el análisis de obras literarias, cine y dramaturgia en las cuales se narran o se evidencian procesos de ocultamiento de "verdades" dolorosas para los implicados, hasta reflexiones críticas sobre hechos sociales pertinentes al tema. A pesar de la complejidad del tema, las autoras logran exponer en la segunda parte del libro, de manera clara, sencilla y amena los resultados de la investigación con la población estudiada, la cual estuvo constituida por un grupo de mujeres del barrio Mojica de la ciudad de Cali, un grupo de estudiantes universitarios y personas de la consulta privada de las autoras. Las investigadoras muestran los movimientos retroactivos de este proceso de investigación, el ir y venir entre la reflexión y la acción; entre lo leído, la intervención, los hallazgos y el análisis. La obra constituye un aporte valioso para la comprensión e intervención del fenómeno por parte de la comunidad académica y profesional. Al público en general le brinda elementos reflexivos para desentrañar los límites entre la verdad, la mentira y el engaño. También bosqueja una tipología de secretos que va desde los placenteros hasta los peligrosos, ofrece pistas para dilucidar el dilema acerca de si deben o no revelar todos los secretos, plantea los riesgos de los programas de televisión en los que se revelan verdades a cambio de premios. Las autoras constantemente ilustran la teoría, bien sea con casos de la literatura, del cine o de la vida cotidiana. Analizan hechos recientes de la realidad nacional e internacional vinculados con el problema de la verdad y la mentira.

Para examinar el pensamiento de estos estudiosos, el autor recurre a conceptos de la teoría crítica, relacionando así la arquitectura con modelos históricos más amplios. The global spread of uniform modes of production and cultural values has been accompanied by a dissemination of stereotypes of "modern" architecture styles almost everywhere around the globe. Paradoxically, the reverse process has also emerged: In some countries, the elites feel the necessity to counterbalance the "loss of identity" and defend their own cultures against the "intruding" forces of globalization. What started as a defensive notion has developed into a more progressive attempt to re-create what has allegedly been lost. This trend is being strongly expressed in discourses about architecture in countries of the South. Who are the actors feeling compelled to "construct" new identities? How are these new identities in architecture created in various parts of the world? And, which are the ingredients borrowed from various historical and ethnic traditions and other sources? Mexico City became one of the centers of architectural modernism in the Americas in the first half of the twentieth century. Invigorated by insights drawn from the first published histories of Mexican colonial architecture, which suggested that Mexico possessed a distinctive architecture and culture, beginning in the 1920s a new generation of architects created profoundly visual modern buildings intended to convey Mexico's unique cultural character. By midcentury these architects and their students had rewritten the country's architectural history and transformed the capital into a metropolis where new buildings that evoked pre-conquest, colonial, and International Style architecture coexisted. Through an exploration of schools, a university campus, a government ministry, a workers' park, and houses for Diego Rivera and Luis Barragan, Kathryn O'Rourke offers a new interpretation of modern architecture in the Mexican capital, showing close links between design, evolving understandings of national architectural history, folk art, and social reform. This book demonstrates why creating a distinctively Mexican architecture captivated architects whose work was formally dissimilar, and how that concern became central to the profession.
