Eine Antwort liefert diese Arbeit durch eine Analyse des Werks "Moral & Politik" von Vittorio Hösle. Aus politikwissenschaftlicher Sicht analysiert die Arbeit den verwendeten Politikbegriff und legt die von Hösle dargestellten ethischen Maßstäbe auf das Werk selbst an. Hösles Argumentation für eine philosophische Letztbegründung machen sowohl "Moral & Politik" als auch diese Arbeit zu einer spannenden Lektüre, da das Versprechen einer Letztbegründung überhaupt erst zur Klärung beitragen kann, ob es "die" moralische Politik überhaupt gibt. Der Autor begründet dabei eine libertäre Moral und führt diese exotische Spielart des Liberalismus gegen die von Hösle entwickelten Vorstellungen eines Weltstaates ins Feld. Die Arbeit legt offen, dass Hösles Moral in eine ökologische Diktatur führt und er dafür eine vermeintlich objektive Wahrheit in Anspruch nimmt, ohne diese widerspruchsfrei herzuleiten - also einen letzten Grund anzugeben. Die eigenen Überlegungen des Autors sind schlüssig dargestellt, lassen den Leser jedoch etwas verstört zurück.

Für Erich Kästner stellten moralische Überzeugungen und politisches Handeln eine Einheit dar. Begründete er die Haltung in seiner Frühzeit auf der Grundlage eines moralischen Gefühls, das vor allem bei Kindern, Künstlern und Außenseitern ausgeprägt sein sollte, so wandelt sich diese Auffassung durch die Kriegserlebnisse. Nach 1945 wirkte Kästner in Literatur, Publizistik und im Rahmen seiner PEN-Club-Aktivitäten deutlich direkter politisch. Die Beiträge des Bandes versuchen, diese Entwicklung zwischen moralischer Politik und politischer Moral nachzuzeichnen. Eine Aufgabe der Beiträge besteht daher in einer präzisen Rekonstruktion des moralischen Emotionalismus Erich Kästners, den er von seiner frühen Lyrik bis zu seinen spätesten Artikeln und Solidaritätsadressen wie selbstverständlich ausprägte und der ohne jede metaphysische Referenz auskommt. Besonders komplex gerät diese Aufgabe, weil Kästners bisweilen rigoristischer Moralismus mit den Instrumenten eines ganz eigentümlichen Humors abgefedert wird, der mehr verstärkend als entlastend wirkt.

In this book the author argues that moral principles are principles of rational choice. According to the usual view of choice, a rational person selects what is likely to give the greatest expectation of value or utility. But in many situations, if each person chooses in this way, everyone will be worse off than need be. Instead, Professor Gauthier proposes a principle whereby choice is made on an agreed basis of co-operation, rather than according to what would give the individual the greatest expectation of value. He shows that such a principle not only ensures mutual benefit and fairness, thus satisfying the standards of morality, but also that each person may actually expect greater utility by adhering to morality, even though the choice did not have that end primarily in view. In resolving what may appear to be a paradox, the author establishes morals on the firm foundation of reason.

Excerpt from The Origin and Development of the Moral Ideas, Vol. 1 of 2 The frequent references made in the present work, on my own authority, to customs and ideas prevalent among the natives of Morocco, require a word of explanation. Seeing the close connection between moral opinions and magic and religious beliefs, I thought it might be useful for me to acquire first-hand knowledge of the folk-lore of some non-European people, and for various reasons I chose Morocco as my field of research. During the four years I spent there, largely among its country population, I have not only collected anthropological data, but tried to make myself familiar with the native way of thinking; and I venture to believe that this has helped me to understand various customs occurring at a stage of civilisation different from our own. I purpose before long to publish the detailed results of my studies in a special monograph on the popular religion and magics of the Moors.
