Television news in India in the 1980s meant Doordarshan till NDTV came along and changed things forever. Beginning with a half-hour show on Doordarshan, The World This Week, in 1988, NDTV went from strength to strength. In 1995, it aired India's first-ever private news broadcast, with Prannoy Roy's announcement - 'It's eight o'clock and this is The News Tonight coming to you live' - marking a paradigm shift in news media in the country. It then went on to become an independent broadcaster in 2003. For over twenty-five years, the name NDTV has been synonymous with news and credible reporting in India. It is a pioneer in Indian TV journalism, breaking new ground and creating a whole industry. More News Is Good News records this phenomenal journey through the experiences of reporters, anchors, editors, camerapersons and producers, many of whom are now household names, including Prannoy Roy, Vikram Chandra, Ravish Kumar, Barkha Dutt, Sonia Singh, Sreenivasan Jain, Vishnu Som, Nidhi Razdan, Maya Mirchandani, Rajdeep Sardesai and Shekhar Gupta, among others. In the process, it provides a ringside view of the unshackling of the economy and the media, the dilemmas involved in reporting wars and natural disasters, the frontlines and the fault lines that defined the country, news coverage that morphed into nationwide public campaigns and altered the way we respond to the world around us. In the telling of these stories which reflect the countless realities of a changing nation, More News Is Good News also charts the fascinating evolution of news television in independent India over a quarter century.

STOP READING THE NEWS is a vital toolkit for managing the upsetting coronavirus news cycle and finding equilibrium and calm at a time of chaos and uncertainty In 2013 Rolf Dobelli stood in front of a roomful of journalists and proclaimed that he did not read the news. It caused a riot. Now the author of the bestselling The Art of Thinking Clearly finally sets down his philosophy in detail. And he practises what he preaches: he hasn't read the news for a decade. Stop Reading the News is Dobelli's manifesto about the dangers of the most toxic form of information - news. He shows the damage it does to our concentration and well-being, and how a misplaced sense of duty can misdirect our behaviour. Most importantly, he offers the reader the guidance on how to live without news, and the many potential gains to be had: less disruption, more time, less anxiety, more insights. In a world of increasing disruption and division, Stop Reading the News is a welcome voice of calm and wisdom.

In Good News, Bad News , Jeremy Iggers argues that journalism's institutionalized conversation about ethics largely evades the most important issues regarding the public interest and the civic responsibilities of the press. Changes in the ownership and organization of the news media make these issues especially timely; although journalism's ethics rest on the idea of journalism as a profession, the rise of market-driven journalism has undermined journalists' professional status. Ultimately, argues Iggers, journalism is impossible without a public that cares about the common life. Written in an accessible style, Good News, Bad News is important reading for journalists, communication scholars, and students. }Public dissatisfaction with the news media frequently gives rise to calls for journalists to live up to the ethical standards of their profession. All The News That S Fit To Sell written by James T. Hamilton and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-10-23 with Business & Economics categories.

That market forces drive the news is not news. Whether a story appears in print, on television, or on the Internet depends on who is interested, its value to advertisers, the costs of assembling the details, and competitors' products. But in All the News That's Fit to Sell, economist James Hamilton shows just how this happens. Furthermore, many complaints about journalism--media bias, soft news, and pundits as celebrities--arise from the impact of this economic logic on news judgments. This is the first book to develop an economic theory of news, analyze evidence across a wide range of media markets on how incentives affect news content, and offer policy conclusions. Media bias, for instance, was long a staple of the news. Hamilton's analysis of newspapers from 1870 to 1900 reveals how nonpartisan reporting became the norm. A hundred years later, some partisan elements reemerged as, for example, evening news broadcasts tried to retain young female viewers with stories aimed at their (Democratic) political interests. Examination of story selection on the network evening news programs from 1969 to 1998 shows how cable competition, deregulation, and ownership changes encouraged a shift from hard news about politics toward more soft news about entertainers. Hamilton concludes by calling for lower costs of access to government information, a greater role for nonprofits in funding journalism, the development of norms that stress hard news reporting, and the defining of digital and Internet property rights to encourage the flow of news. Ultimately, this book shows that by more fully understanding the economics behind the news, we will be better positioned to ensure that the news serves the public good.
