The author is a semi-retired Canadian exploration geologist, currently an artist and writer. His work as a geologist has taken him to many remote, frontier areas of the world, regions that collectively might be referred to as "the bush," hence the reference in the title to "underbrush." The life of an exploration geologist, while tremendously exhilarating, can at the same time, and certainly during the middle part of the last century when most of the book's content takes place, be described as one of hardship, deprivation, and danger. The process of exploration in wildly varied terrains and circumstances when mixed with the strengths, frailties and often deep cultural cross-currents of the human condition provide the recipe for fascinating experiences to which most urban dwellers are not privy. Laced with hyperbole to lighten often dangerous or uncomfortable circumstances, the events as described are completely accurate; in some cases embarrassingly so for the author!

The tales in parts one and two are a continuation of those found in the authors book Stories of Life and Tales of the Korean War, dealing with the human condition in peace and war. Although fictionalized, in general, as in the first book, the stories that follow are largely based on observation and, sometimes, shocking reality. A few in part one are highly imaginative, perhaps appearing to a reader as adult fairy tales. The motivation for writing part two was a stirring article the author read entitled Swifty written by Chuck Yeager, a well-known and respected retired US general, and is referred to in its epilogue. The stories presented here, although written in a fictionalized format, are largely based on the experiences and actions involving real people and events. The subject matter is not always nice or inspirational, neither is life or war. It would be surprising if readers are unable to find elements in some stories relevant to their own experiences in life.

The third novel in the beloved Tales of the City series, Armistead Maupin’s best-selling San Francisco saga. ‘An enormously talented writer... By writing about what's seemingly different Armistead Maupin always manages to capture what's so hilariously painfully true for all of us’ Amy Tan ____________________ The calamity-prone residents of 28 Barbary Lane are at it again in this deliciously dark novel of romance and betrayal. While Anna Madrigal imprisons an anchor-woman in her basement, Michael Tolliver looks for love at the National Gay Rodeo, DeDe Halcyon Day and Mary Ann Singleton track a charismatic psychopath across Alaska, and society columnist Prue Giroux loses her heart to a derelict living in a San Francisco park. Hurdling barriers both social and sexual, Maupin leads the eccentric tenants of Barbary Lane through heartbreak and triumph, through nail-biting terrors and gleeful coincidences in 1970s San Francisco. The result is a glittering and addictive comedy of manners that continues to beguile new generations of readers.

John Gurda’s South Side Milwaukee family loved potluck dinners. “From the Jell-O salads at the start of the line through the hot dishes in the middle and on to the pumpkin bars at the end, the food was always hearty, abundant, and certifiably homemade,” he writes. Drawing from Gurda’s long-running Sunday Milwaukee Journal Sentinel column, Brewtown Tales was prepared in the spirit of those fondly remembered meals. The main dish is Milwaukee history, served in a multitude of ways. You will find in these pages the biography of a bridge, a requiem for a union, tales of two shipwrecks, a frank take on segregation, and memories of the summer of ’68, among many other things. There are also side dishes that convey the distinctive flavors of Wisconsin and a few more exotic places, from Vilas County to Vietnam. Brewtown Tales will satisfy your hunger, introduce you to new and unexpected tastes, and whet your appetite for more homemade history.
