The nineteenth-century Mormon prophet Joseph Smith published a new scripture dominated by the figure of Jesus Christ, dictated revelations presented as the words of the Christian savior, spoke of encountering Jesus in visions, and told his followers that their messiah and king would soon return to the earth. From the author of the definitive life of Brigham Young comes a biography of the Mormon Jesus that revises and enriches our understanding of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Over the past two hundred years, Jesus has connected the Latter-day Saints to broader currents of Christianity, even while particular Mormon beliefs and practices have been points of differentiation and conflict. The Latter-day Saints came to understand Jesus Christ as the literal son of his father, the exalted brother of God’s other spirit children, who should aspire to become like him. They gave new meaning to many titles for Jesus Christ: Father, Son of God, Lord, Savior, Firstborn, Elder Brother, Bridegroom, and Jehovah. While some early beliefs became canonized and others were discarded, Jesus Christ remains central to Latter-day Saint scripture, doctrine, and religious experience. Contemporary Mormon leaders miss no opportunity to proclaim their church’s devotion to the Christian savior, in part because evangelical Protestants denounce Mormonism as a non-Christian cult. This tension between Mormonism's distinctive claims and the church’s desire to be accepted as Christian, John G. Turner argues, continues to shape Mormon identity and attract new members to the church.

"Mormonism, or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is America's most successful--and most misunderstood--home grown religion. Avoiding the textbook, narrative approach of most introductions, this volume instead poses well over a hundred commonly asked questions--and some not so common!--and provides thoughtful, short essays in response. The question and answer format means enhanced readability; perfect for casual browsing or in-depth study. General topics include theology, culture, history, scripture, and practice. Questions range from the straightforward ("What circumstances gave rise to Mormonism?"), to the controversial ("Why do Mormons Accept the Book of Abraham as scripture if Egyptologists have discredited it?") to the exotic ("What is Kolob?"; "Is the Garden of Eden in Missouri?")"--

One of the four volumes of scripture accepted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is an abridgment by an ancient prophet named Mormon of the records of ancient inhabitants of the Americas. It was written to testify that Jesus is the Christ. Concerning this record, the Prophet Joseph Smith, who translated it by the gift and power of God, said, “I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book” (see the introduction at the front of the Book of Mormon). The Book of Mormon is a religious record of three groups of people who migrated from the Old World to the American continents. These groups were led by prophets who recorded their religious and secular histories on metal plates. The Book of Mormon records the visit of Jesus Christ to people in the Americas following His Resurrection. A two-hundred-year era of peace followed that visit of Christ. Moroni, the last of the Nephite prophet-historians, sealed up the abridged records of these people and hid them in about A.D. 421. In 1823, the resurrected Moroni visited Joseph Smith and later delivered to him these ancient and sacred records to be translated and brought forth to the world as another testament of Jesus Christ. ©2013 Intellectual Reserve, Inc

Joseph Smith Jesus And Satanic Opposition written by Douglas J. Davies and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-26 with Religion categories.

This book explores Mormon theology in new ways from a scholarly non-Mormon perspective. Bringing Jesus and Satan into relationship with Joseph Smith the founding prophet, Douglas Davies shows how the Mormon 'Plan of Salvation' can be equated with mainstream Christianity's doctrine of the Trinity as a driving force of the faith. Exploring how Jesus has been understood by Mormons, his many Mormon identities are described in this book: he is the Jehovah of the Bible, our Elder Brother and Father, probably also a husband, he visited the dead and is also the antagonist of Satan-Lucifer. This book offers a way into the Mormon 'problem of evil' understood as apostasy, from pre-mortal times to today. Three images reveal the wider problem of evil in Mormonism: Jesus' pre-mortal encounter with Lucifer in a heavenly council deciding on the Plan of Salvation, Jesus Christ's great suffering-engagement with evil in Gethsemane, and Joseph Smith's First Vision of the divine when he was almost destroyed by an evil force. Douglas Davies, well-known for his previous accounts of Mormon life and thought, shows how renewed Mormon interest in theological questions of belief can be understood against the background of Mormon church-organization and its growing presence on the world-stage of Christianity.

God Is Greater Than You Think written by Wade Wadsworth and has been published by WestBow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-23 with Religion categories.

Wade Wadsworth was born into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Although he was active in the church as a youth, as Wade grew older, he began to question some of the Mormon teachings. After a search for answers led him down an introspective path lined with soul-searching, prayer, and guidance from the scriptures, Wade found the one true God of whom the Lord Jesus Christ spoke in John 17:3 and ultimately left the church. In an insightful memoir that focuses on presenting the scriptural and theological reasons why Wadsworth walked away from the Mormon Church, he identifies the true Christ, church, priesthood, salvation and Christian life while providing historical answers and gentle guidance for anyone questioning the validity of Mormon teachings or inquiring into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Throughout his presentation, Wadsworth emphasizes that no matter what our spiritual journeys, each of us holds the power to walk away from a church that does not match the teachings of the Bible and find one that does. God Is Greater Than You Think provides insights and biblical answers for anyone considering joining or leaving the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
