Morphological creativity is not a complicated concept, although it may be used to present complex ideas. Essentially, it is a process for creating new ideas by analyzing the form and structure of existing ones and changing the relationships of their components. The example following will show that the basic technic of morphological creativity is very simple: A morphological plan for creative writing. A problem that constantly faces any writer is to see, and to present, the relationship between the element with which he is concerned. This is a book written especially for the person who wants his or her life to count for as much as possible. For the person who feels that he has not achieved what he should have, and who has faith that if his inherent potentials were utilized that he would enjoy a richer, more satisfying, life. In the book you will find many familiar ideas. The value of the book lies not in the number of new ideas presented, but in the new ideas that are developed by the synthesis of old ideas. The morphological method, by which your own ideas and those of your associates are synthesized, is a very new and extremely powerful tool for creative thinking, problem solving, and decision making. The most complex problem may be expressed in a simple, readily understood form, and when the real problem in a situation is clearly understood then efficient work on solutions is possible. Why are there more English words ending in -ness than ending in -ity? What is it about some endings that makes them more widely usable than others? Can we measure the differences in the facility with which the various affixes are used? Does the difference in facility reflect a difference in the way we treat words containing these affixes in the brain? These are the questions examined in this book. Morphological productivity has, over the centuries, been a major factor in providing the huge vocabulary of English and remains one of the most contested areas in the study of word-formation and structure. This book takes an eclectic approach to the topic, applying the findings for morphology to syntax and phonology. Bringing together the results of twenty years' work in the field, it provides new insights and considers a wide range of linguistic and psycholinguistic evidence.

The field of morphology is particularly heterogeneous. Investigators differ on key points at every level of theory. These divisions are not minor issues about technical implementation, but rather are foundational issues that mold the underlying anatomy of any theory. The field has developed very rapidly both theoretically and methodologically, giving rise to many competing theories and varied hypotheses. Many drastically different and often contradictory models and foundational hypotheses have been proposed. Theories diverge with respect to everything from foundational architectural assumptions to the specific combinatorial mechanisms used to derive complex words. Today these distinct models of word-formation largely exist in parallel, mostly without proponents confronting or discussing these differences in any major forum. After forty years of fast-paced growth in the field, morphologists are in need of a moment to take a breath and survey the drastically different points of view within the field. This volume provides such a moment.

Essay from the year 2000 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7 (A-), University of Hamburg (FB Anglistics), course: Seminar II, language: English, abstract: This paper deals with a fundamental branch of linguistic research. The term fundamental is justified insofar as the ability to analyse a continuous string of sounds into discrete units constitutes a central part of language comprehension. The analysis of morphological structures is situated right at the basic level of a language because it reveals deeper insight into how the smallest meaningful parts of a language are organized. A morphological description includes information about the internal structure of words, the rules that govern these structures and the relationship among words. Furthermore, the linguists′ interest in morphology is not just concerned with a mere description of that what already exists – it is also aimed to show in how far a language may be viewed as potentially creative with regard to the invention of new words on the basis of a given set of rules. This process is traditionally referred to as productivity and equated with “linguistic creativity” or “creativity in language”. The corresponding field of linguistic reserach deals with the study of words which goes beyond the limitations of dictionary entries. In this context words, phrases and texts must be seen as larger, complex or non-primitive units that are built up from morphemes in successive stages.
