Jean Petitot is a polyhedric thinker whose contributions has been fundamental in a number of disciplines, such as epistemology, morphodynamics, differential geometry, structural semiotics, neurogeometry, phenomenology, linguistics, cognitive grammars, the theory of catastrophes, social sciences, literary studies, and aesthetics. This book is a homage to his huge contribution about the main concepts of morphogenesis and meaning that constitute the center of gravity around which Petitotian reflection revolves and returns. The scientific path of Jean Petitot develops between these two poles, topology and meaning. At stake it was to challenge the hiatus separating the exact sciences from the humanities that was the main point of the Petitot seminar of EHESS Epistemology of Models. By designing the appropriate qualitative dynamics between the two poles, form and meaning, it is possible to understand the Saussurian sign in structural semiotics, or the Greimasian semiotic square for deep narrative structures or even the canonical formula of the myth of Lévi Strauss in structural anthropology. These are just few results in applying the theory of catastrophes to the emergence of meaning. The book is a collection of testimonies by distinguished authors who worked extensively with Jean Petitot in the different fields of Mathematics, Neurogeometry, Semiotics, Aesthetics, and Epistemology. An extensive bibliography of Petitot’s work is also presented.

The French mathematician René Thom (Fields medal 1958) died in 2002. In this volume his contributions to biology, semiotics and linguistics are discussed by a group of scholars who have continued his work and have shaped the new paradigm of dynamic semiotics and linguistics. Thom's heritage is full of revolutionary ideas and deep insights which stem from a rich intuition and a sharp awareness of the current state of the sciences, including their potentials and risks. The contributions to this volume are elaborations of papers given at a colloquium at the International Center for Semiotics and Linguistics of the University of Urbino (Italy), in 2005. The central concern of this volume is semiogenesis, i.e. the evolution and differentiation of meaningful («pregnant») forms in the field of symbolic systems - from bio-communication to language and cultural forms like music, art, architecture or urban forms. The basic questions are: How are meanings created and further differentiated? Where do they come from? What kind of forces drive their unfolding? How can complex cultural forms be understood based on simple morphodynamic principles? Applications concern the perception of forms by animals and humans, the categorization of forms e.g. in a lexicon, and predication or other complex symbolic behaviors which show up in grammar or in cultural artifacts like the unfolding of urban centers.

This contributed volume gives access to semiotic researches adopting a quantitative stance. European semiotics is traditionally based on immanent methodologies: meaning is seen as an autonomous dimension of human existence, whose laws can be investigated via purely qualitative analytical and reflexive analysis. Today, researches crossing disciplinary boundaries reveal the limitations of such an homogeneous practice. In particular, two families of quantitative research strategies can be identified. On the one hand, researchers wish to naturalize meaning, by making semiotic results interact with those coming from Neurophysiological and psychological sciences. This book describes several mathematical models of the primary visual cortex, referring them to a vast ensemble of experimental data and putting forward an original geometrical model for its functional architecture, that is, the highly specific organization of its neural connections. The book spells out the geometrical algorithms implemented by this functional architecture, or put another way, the “neurogeometry” immanent in visual perception. Focusing on the neural origins of our spatial representations, it demonstrates three things: firstly, the way the visual neurons filter the optical signal is closely related to a wavelet analysis; secondly, the contact structure of the 1-jets of the curves in the plane (the retinal plane here) is implemented by the cortical functional architecture; and lastly, the visual algorithms for integrating contours from what may be rather incomplete sensory data can be modelled by the sub-Riemannian geometry associated with this contact structure. As such, it provides readers with the first systematic interpretation of a number of important neurophysiological observations in a well-defined mathematical framework. The book’s neuromathematical exploration appeals to graduate students and researchers in integrative-functional-cognitive neuroscience with a good mathematical background, as well as those in applied mathematics with an interest in neurophysiology.

The general topic of this book is the development of a realistic model of meaning; it has to account for the ecological basis of meaning in perception, action, and interaction, and is realistic in the sense of scientific realism, i.e. it is based on the most successful paradigm of modern science: dynamical systems theory. In Part One a model of sentences is put forward. The first chapter outlines the philosophical background of a theory of meaning. Chapter 2 gives a very short summary of recent proposals for a semantic model which considers image-like schemata. In Chapter 3 a realistic model of valence and basic predication is developed in detail. Chapter 4 treats multistability in meaning and the application of chaos theory and dissipative structures in semantics. Chapter 5 outlines the global framework of a stratified universe of meanings, and Chapter 6 prepares the way for Part Two: the analysis of narrative texts. Oral narratives of personal experience are the prototypical form in which experienced events are organized with the aim of remaking a piece of reality. In Chapter 7 a discrete grammar based on vectorial schemata is developed. Chapters 8 and 9 elaborate the syntax of narratives in Chapter 7. Chapter 10 progress to conversational dynamics.

This book presents new research into the great structural diversity found in Sinitic languages. While many studies focus principally on Standard Mandarin, this work draws on extensive empirical data from lesser-known languages, and seeks to dispel many recurrent linguistic myths about the Sinitic language family. Part I presents findings that show the important interplay of research into diachronic linguistics and typology in China, beginning with a discussion of how to tackle the issue of linguistic diversity in Sinitic languages. This study examines the creation of the Soviet State in Central Asia through the lens of Uzbek cinema—from the collapse of the Russian Empire to WWII. Between the founding of Soviet Uzbekistan in 1924 and the Stalinist Terror of the late 1930s, a nationalist cinema emerged. In Cinema, Nation, and Empire in Uzbekistan Cloé Drieu argues that the Uzbek films of this period provide a perfect angle for viewing the complex history of domination, nationalism, and empire building within the Soviet sphere. By exploring all of film’s dimensions—including production, reception, and discourse—Drieu reveals how nation and empire were built up as institutional realities and as imaginary constructs. Combining research in the Uzbek and Russian State Archives and in-depth analyses of fourteen films, Drieu’s work examines the debates within the totalitarian and so-called revisionist schools that invigorated Soviet historiography. Revised and expanded from the original French, Cinema, Nation, and Empire in Uzbekistan helps us to understand how Central Asia, formerly part of the Russian Empire, was decolonized, only to suffer a new style of domination in the run-up to the Stalinist period and repression of the late 1930s.
