Il Medioevo trasmette all’Età moderna le norme, i riti e i simboli che scandivano gli eventi spesso drammatici della morte del papa e dell’elezione del successore. Questo volume propone una lettura degli interregni papali dal XV al XIX secolo, evidenziando, oltre ai molti elementi di continuità con la fase storica precedente, gli apporti specifici dell’Età moderna. La compresenza fino al 1870 nella figura fisica del papa del principe territoriale dello Stato Ecclesiastico e del Vicario di Cristo e anche le trasformazioni della residenzialità del papa (dal Vaticano al Quirinale) spiegano molte delle innovazioni rituali che qui individuiamo. Il lettore scoprirà anche quanto forte fosse in Età moderna la dimensione politica della elezione papale e come i rapporti di forza internazionali condizionassero le fazioni cardinalizie. Anche se ciascun conclave aveva una sua storia, nel volume si rintracciano dinamiche ricorrenti e una tensione permanente tra l’aspirazione all’autonomia ecclesiastica e l’irruzione dei conflitti esterni nello spazio chiuso dei conclavi.

Electing the Pope in Early Modern Italy, 1450-1700 offers a radical reassessment of the history of early modern papacy, constructed through the first major analytical treatment of papal elections in English. Papal elections, with their ceremonial pomp and high drama, are compelling theatre, but, until now, no one has analysed them on the basis of the problems they created for cardinals: how were they to agree rules and enforce them? How should they manage the interregnum? How did they decide for whom to vote? How was the new pope to assert himself over a group of men who, until just moments before, had been his equals and peers? This study traces how the cardinals' responses to these problems evolved over the period from Martin V's return to Rome in 1420 to Pius VI's departure from it in 1798, placing them in the context of the papacy's wider institutional developments. Miles Pattenden argues not only that the elective nature of the papal office was crucial to how papal history unfolded but also that the cardinals of the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries present us with a unique case study for observing the approaches to decision-making and problem-solving within an elite political group.

How was the history of post-classical Rome and of the Church written in the Catholic Reformation? Historical texts composed in Rome at this time have been considered secondary to the city's significance for the history of art. The Invention of Papal History corrects this distorting emphasis and shows how historical writing became part of a comprehensive formation of the image and self-perception of the papacy. By presenting and fully contextualising the path-breaking works of the Augustinian historian Onofrio Panvinio (1530-1568), Stefan Bauer shows what type of historical research was possible in the late Renaissance and the Catholic Reformation. Crucial questions were, for example: How were the pontiffs elected? How many popes had been puppets of emperors? Could any of the past machinations, schisms, and disorder in the history of the Church be admitted to the reading public? Historiography in this period by no means consisted entirely of commissioned works written for patrons; rather, a creative interplay existed between, on the one hand, the endeavours of authors to explore the past and, on the other hand, the constraints of ideology and censorship placed on them. The Invention of Papal History sheds new light on the changing priorities, mentalities, and cultural standards that flourished in the transition from the Renaissance to the Catholic Reformation.

Thus a royal court took shape, and shortly thereafter became a matter of admiration to diplomats and foreign travelers, as well as a symbol of reinforcement of the State’s authority and autonomy. This volume investigates Charles’ and Maria Amalia’s court, that has long been neglected by historians, from different points of view: continuity and changes with respect to previous viceregal models and other European models, the symbolic importance of ceremonies and etiquette in creating hierarchies, the architectural scenarios and the plurality of locations (Naples, Capodimonte, Caserta, Carditello, Portici, Persano). Weddings, births, funerals, theatrical performances and archaeological excavations, hunting meetings and secular and religious ceremonies: for the king, all these were occasions to exhibit his majesty and munificence, and to celebrate the union between himself and his subjects. Even bows and hand-kissing could serve to build a society of good manners and to forge a prominent image of the Neapolitan State on the European stage.

Ippolito II d’Este (1509-1572), cardinal and prince of Ferrara, played a crucial role in shaping the political and cultural connections between Italy and France. Seen by his contemporaries as staunchly ‘French’, his life rather followed a difficult balance between the political and spatial entities – Rome, Paris, and Ferrara – through which he continuously moved and from which he derived his power. Following his career as cardinal protector of the Valois crown, royal administrator of Siena on behalf of Henry II, and papal legate to France on the eve of the Wars of Religion, this book argues that Ippolito’s apparent diplomatic access ultimately weakened his family’s position in Italy and left it ill-equipped to compete in the changing politics of the peninsula.

Factional Struggles' explores the dynamics of conflicts among ruling elites within cities, dynastic courts, rural areas and regional noble lineages during the early modern period. Building on case studies from France, Italy, the Empire and the Swiss Confederation, the essays collected by Mathieu Caesar in this volume highlight how factions were formed and how they shaped political society from the late Middle Ages.
