This volume presents seventeen motets by Gioseffo Zarlino (1517–90) published in 1563 and 1566. Together with two earlier volumes in this series (R145 and R149), it completes a modern critical edition of Zarlino’s motets. Four of the motets in this edition were originally published in the anthology Motetta D. Cipriani de Rore et aliorum auctorum (Venice: Scotto, 1563). They are all four-voice settings a voci pari (for equal voices), with three—based on texts from the Office of the Dead—grouped together as “lectiones pro mortuis.” The other thirteen motets comprised Zarlino’s second book of motets, the Modulationes sex vocum (Venice: Rampazetto, 1566). They are for six or (in one case) seven voices and set a range of liturgical and biblical texts. With a single exception, they all include canons and explore a wide range of compositional techniques for canonic writing, thus highlighting the close connection between this collection and the contrapuntal exposition in Zarlino’s theoretical treatise Le istitutioni harmoniche (1558, 1573). The modern assessment of Zarlino’s legacy has rested primarily on his reputation as a theorist; but with his musical works now fully accessible, his compositions may stand alongside his better-known theoretical writings, allowing a fuller evaluation of his work as a composer and the way in which his compositional and theoretical enterprises were intimately intertwined.

Beginning in the sixteenth century, many of Europe’s greatest musicians as well as many whom we know less well wrote motets in honor of Saint Cecilia. The trend started in the north: until the 1560s, composers of Cecilian motets were mostly active in northern France and the Netherlands. The present anthology, a companion to the editor’s recently published book, Saint Cecilia in the Renaissance: The Emergence of a Musical Icon (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2022), includes works that have not yet been published in modern editions or that have been published in performing editions or in critical editions that have not circulated widely. The motets range chronologically from 1542 to 1610, geographically from Antwerp and Paris to Prague and Rome, and in number of voices from four to sixteen. The anthology includes several polychoral works and two so-called “picture motets,” miniature motets written for (and preserved in) engravings that show Cecilia making music with angels.

In this, the first of a three-volume study of Byrd's complete output, under the general title The Music of William Byrd, the author essays a first full-scale historical and critical assessment of Byrd's sacred music to Latin words - one of the great glories of the Elizabethan Age. Each of the approximately 175 compositions is considered, at least briefly, with fuller appreciation accorded to such masterpieces as Emendemus in Melius, Tristitia et anxietas, Iusorum animae, Ave verum corpus, the lamentations and the three famous masses. There are more than sixty musical examples, some of considerable length. In critical prose that slights neither technicalities nor the intense emotional qualities of his subject matter, the author sheds fresh and often unexpected illumination on Byrd's musical rhetoric and on his powerful, endlessly inventive musical structures. Re-examining the known facts of Byrd's life in relation to the patronage and politics of the time, the author boldly argues that while the impetus behind Byrd's early motets was primarily traditionalist and technical, that behind his Cantiones sacrae motets of the 1580s was essentially political: they were covert laments and protests on behalf of the embattled recusant community.
