This research explores the intersection of motherhood and leadership. An examination of existing literature on three leadership styles and qualities associated with who and what makes an effective leader begins this research. This establishes a foundational understanding of leadership to lead into the examination of motherhood's effect on female leadership styles in the workplace. A qualitative research study consisting of 5 interviews with mothers from differing backgrounds and perspectives was performed to discern potential correlations between motherhood and the effectiveness of their leadership. Through written narrations and qualitative analysis, patterns and themes shed light into the relationship between being a mom and being a leader. This study contributes to a small field of research into motherhood and leadership in the workplace.

Dr. Reginald E. Vance's mother, affectionately known as Momma V, was a diligent and experienced leader who understood the individual needs, wants, and requirements of each of her children as well as their leadership strengths and weaknesses. Momma V understood these things because she instinctively and intentionally invested decades of time, money, emotion, affection, training, and other resources to hone her intelligence about her organization--the family unit. Mothers are the greatest leaders known to mankind. In an inspirational guide that provides twelve leadership principles presented within three parts--Motivation, Optimism, and Momentum (MOM)--Dr. Vance begins by sharing real-life stories about prayer, positivity, patience, and praise as they relate to the motivation of people, families, groups, communities, and organizations. Within the second and third sections, Dr. Vance offers interrelated stories of purpose, people, persistence, and perspective to provide examples of the organizational skills effective leadership requires, and then shares the principles of priorities, preparation, perseverance, and prosperity that help build the momentum required to achieve-success as a leader. Mothers and Leadership is a valuable guide for anyone who wants to enhance the lives of those they lead in order to improve performance and employee engagement.
