This volume is the first comprehensive single study of Jewish themes in any of the post-1945 German literatures. It presents literature on Jewish themes by Jewish and non-Jewish authors in the cultural, social and political context of the Soviet Zone/GDR during the entire 45 years of its history from 1945 to 1990. It offers a brief history of Jews in the GDR, before looking, in four chronologically ordered chapters, at the history of publishing on Jewish themes in the GDR. Some 28 texts by 19 different authors, including Anna Seghers, Stephan Hermlin, Arnold Zweig, Franz Fühmann, Johannes Bobrowski, Jurek Becker, Stefan Heym, Günter Kunert, Christa Wolf and Helga Königsdorf, are then singled out for closer analysis. Such themes as historical anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, Jewish resistance, Jewish assimilation, Heine, Marx, Moses Mendelssohn, Jewish survival, and Jews in the GDR are all discussed in the book. The volume also offers evidence of the political influences on publishing on Jewish themes at various stages in the GDR's history. In addition, a structured bibliography of some 1100 items is offered, approximately 750 of which were published in the GDR with a Jewish content or theme. The study should be of interest to students of contemporary German literature and politics, the GDR, and of Jewish studies in the wider context.

The Memory Factory introduces an English-speaking public to the significant women artists of Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century, each chosen for her aesthetic innovations and participation in public exhibitions. These women played important public roles as exhibiting artists, both individually and in collectives, but this history has been silenced over time. Their stories show that the city of Vienna was contradictory and cosmopolitan: despite men-only policies in its main art institutions, it offered a myriad of unexpected ways for women artists to forge successful public careers. Women artists came from the provinces, Russia, and Germany to participate in its vibrant art scene. However, and especially because so many of the artists were Jewish, their contributions were actively obscured beginning in the late 1930s. Many had to flee Austria, losing their studios and lifework in the process. Some were killed in concentration camps. Along with the stories of individual women artists, the author reconstructs the history of separate women artists' associations and their exhibitions. Chapters covering the careers of Tina Blau, Elena Luksch-Makowsky, Bronica Koller, Helene Funke, and Teresa Ries (among others) point to a more integrated and cosmopolitan art world than previously thought; one where women became part of the avant-garde, accepted and even highlighted in major exhibitions at the Secession and with the Klimt group.

Im Gegensatz zur europaischen Enzyklopadie wissen wir uber die Enzyklopadie im Orient und insbesondere im Osmanischen Reich und der Republik Turkei noch recht wenig. Dabei sind die ersten allgemeinen osmanischen und turkischen Enzyklopadien, die seit der zweiten Halfte des 19. Jahrhunderts publiziert wurden, sehr aussagekraftige Zeugnisse des tiefgreifenden kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Transformationsprozesses, der sich unter dem Einfluss Europas in der Spatzeit des Osmanischen Reiches und in der Fruhzeit der Republik Turkei vollzogen hat. Schon allein das Aufkommen der "Enzyklopadie" als solche ist ein Resultat der Aneignung eines westlichen, zunachst franzosischen Werktypus. Doch auch die formale und inhaltliche Gestaltung der ersten osmanischen allgemeinen Enzyklopadien, ihre Herstellungs- und Distributionsformen sowie die erklarten Ziele ihrer Autoren und Herausgeber zeigen sehr deutlich, wie sich die zunehmende Orientierung an europaischen und spater amerikanischen Vorbildern auf die Vorstellungswelt und das Bildungsverstandnis turkischer Intellektueller ausgewirkt hat. Diese Untersuchung stellt eine ausfuhrliche Analyse der allgemeinen osmanischturkischen Enzyklopadien der Jahre 1870-1936 dar. Ihre Ergebnisse werden unter Berucksichtigung des osmanischturkischen Modernisierungsprozesses interpretiert, bewertet und somit sehr anschaulich in einem Gesamtkontext prasentiert.
