Mount Allison University has consistently been ranked among the leading undergraduate universities in Canada over the last two decades. How does a small-town university with a population of just 2,500 students achieve such outstanding successes year after year? According to Dr. Louise Wasylkiw and Dr. Jennifer L. Tomes, it is the exceptional quality of teaching that makes 'Mount A' truly stand out from the crowd. In this volume, Wasylkiw and Tomes have assembled essays from across disciplines that examine the diversity of pedagogical methods and philosophies that instructors currently employ to give Mount A students a modern, critical, and conscientious education experience. Arranged around the themes of course conceptualization, targeted teaching techniques, and going beyond performance assessments to measure students' outcomes, the contributors' essays range widely in scope. Their collective theme, however, is the depth and breadth of the high quality of teaching offered at Mount A.

Often the teachings about Jesuswho he was and what he does for usovershadow the teachings of Jesus about how to live our lives. Many of his teachings were grouped together in chapters five through seven of the Gospel of Matthew, commonly called The Sermon on the Mount. In When Jesus Sat Down to Teach, author Stanley A. Fry offers a collection of sermons that show the life-changing vision Jesus taught and modeled. He brings a fresh look to answering the following questions: What was the connection between Jesus and St. Paul? What did Jesus ask his followers to do? What was Jesus trying to accomplish? What did Jesus teach about the Kingdom of God? How did the Christian churches get their doctrines? Based on the Sermon on the Mount, Fry describes how Jesuss teachings thrust the foundation of most of modern Christendom out the door and replace it with Jesuss own program for the Kingdom of God. Seeking to inform and challenge, When Jesus Sat Down to Teach provides a clearer understanding of what Jesus was calling upon the people to do and it clarifies what Jesus believed about the coming of the Kingdom of God and the meaning of his death.

A Silicon Valley entrepreneur takes on the challenge of a lifetime: teaching in one of California's toughest high schools. Entrepreneur Steve Poizner has run a billion dollar company, but the greatest challenge of his life was the year he spent teaching twelfth graders at San Jose's Mt. Pleasant High School. On many days, like the one when a student's boyfriend was arrested for bank robbery, his managerial and entrepreneurial skills seemed irrelevant. But on others, they helped him demonstrate how exciting it is to learn. Playing Jeopardy with the class and inviting speakers into the classroom, Poizner motivated his students by expanding their horizons far beyond their high school's walls. Poizner writes, "Often I came to ask myself one question: What exactly are you doing here? As it turns out, I was receiving one hell of an education." Mt Pleasant is ultimately a success story, as Poizner wins Rookie Teacher of the Year honors and, more important, ensures that all his students graduate.

Excerpt from Studies in the Sermon on the Mount N order to understand the Sermon on the Mount, it lis necessary to have the mind of the Preacher, and this knowledge can be gained by anyone who will receive the Holy Spirit (see Luke XI. 13, John XX. 22, Acts XIX. The Holy Ghost is the only expounder of the teachings of Jesus. The one abiding method of interpretation of the teachings of Jesus is the Spirit of Jesus in the heart of a believer applying His principles to the particular circum stances in which he is placed. Be renewed in the spirit of your mind, says Paul, that you may make out what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Beware of placing Our Lord as Teacher first instead of as Saviour. That tendency is prevalent to-day, and it is a' dangerous tendency. We must know Him first as Saviour before His teaching has any meaning for us, or before it has any meaning other than that of an ideal which leads to despair. Fancy coming to men and women with defective lives and defiled hearts and wrong main springs, and telling them to be pure in heart! What is the use of giving us an ideal we cannot possibly attain? We are happier without knowing it. If Jesus is only a Teacher, then all He can do is to tantalise us by erecting a standard we cannot come anywhere near. But if we know Him first as Saviour, by being born again from above, we know that He did not come to teach us only He came to make us what He teaches we should be. The Sermon on the Mount is a statement of the life we will live when the Holy Spirit is having His way with us. From the best-selling author of My Utmost for His Highest, Studies in the Sermon on the Mount is a grace-filled exposition of Matthew 5-7. Much has been written about these 3 chapters of the New Testament, but Chambers' insightful and theologically rich treatment of the text is both challenging and refreshing. “If Jesus is only a Teacher, then all He can do is to tantalize us by erecting a standard we cannot come anywhere near. But if we know Him first as Savior, by being born again from above, we know that He did not come to teach us only: He came to make us what He teaches we should be. The Sermon on the Mount is a statement of the life we will live when the Holy Spirit is having His way with us. The Sermon on the Mount must produce despair in the natural man; and that is the very thing Jesus means it to do, because immediately we get to despair we are willing to come to Jesus as paupers and to receive from Him. “Blessed are the poor in spirit”—that is the first principle of the Kingdom. So long as we have a conceited, self-righteous notion that we can do the thing if God will help us, God has to allow us to go on until we break the neck of our ignorance over some obstacle, then we are willing to come and receive from Him. The bedrock in Jesus Christ’s Kingdom is poverty, not possession; not decisions for Jesus Christ, but a sense of absolute futility—“I cannot begin to do it.” Then, says Jesus, “Blessed are you.” That is the entrance, and it does take us a long while to believe we are poor. The knowledge of our own poverty brings us to the moral frontier where Jesus Christ works.”
