Mountains are the home of significant ecological resources - wildlife habitat, higher elevation plant systems, steep slopes, delicate soils and water systems. These resources are subject to very visible and growing pressures, most of which are caused by the unique features of mountains. Using as case studies four mountain resorts in the US and Canada, this book analyzes the extent to which the law protects the ecological systems of mountains from the adverse impacts associated with the development, operation and expansion of resorts. In order to examine these issues, Mountain Resorts takes an interdisciplinary approach, with contributions from ecologists and lawyers who focus on ski-related activities, increasing four-season use of the mountains and expanding residential, commercial and recreational development at the mountains' base. Its analysis of an array of US and Canadian federal, state and local laws provides a multifaceted exploration of the intersection of ecology and the law at mountain resorts.

Summer In The Hills written by Andrea Inglis and has been published by Australian Scholary Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with History categories.

In the nineteenth century, Australia's colonial gentry made it fashionable to spend summer in the hills. Mountain resorts or hill stations - in such locations as Mount Macedon in Victoria, the Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands in New South Wales, the Adelaide Hills in South Australia and Toowoomba in Queensland - quickly attracted patrons eager to luxuriate in the cooler climate, seek out the curative mountain air, enjoy the exotic gardens or take part in the refined society which gathered there. In Summer in the Hills, Andrea Inglis examines these antipodean hill- stations in detail, discussing their Imperial and Anglo- Indian antecedents and also considering the sometimes- surprising variations, which manifested in the local exemplars. Drawing on a wealth of lively primary sources, she opens a window on to the distinctive society that developed in the hills. As well, she explores variously the role played by aesthetic values, the importance of medical opinion in defining the hill station as a health resort and the impact of the hill-station experience on colonial attitudes to the bush. Finally, her study suggests that the hill station - no less than the beach or the post-World War II ski resort - made a clear contribution to a fledgling sense of Australian national identity.

The primary aim of this study is to explore the feasibility of mountain resorts as sustainable year-round tourism destinations. To meet this aim, two studies were conducted. Firstly, an examination of the supply side perspective of mountain resort operations was seen as a useful starting point in determining the desire for and ability to provide year-round offerings at one resort in Victoria, Australia. Secondly, we explored international examples of mature mountain resorts that have evolved from single season resorts to year-round destinations.
