Because clerical leaders in Rome were seeking to build a new Catholic world in the aftermath of the Great War, Protestants embodied a special menace, and were seen as carriers of dangers like heresy, secularism, modernity, and Americanism—as potent threats to the Catholic precepts that were the true foundations of Italian civilization, values, and culture. For almost three hundred years there were those in England who believed that an Italian translation of the Book of Common Prayer could trigger radical change in the political and religious landscape of Italy. The aim was to present the text to the Italian religious and political elite, in keeping with the belief that the English liturgy embodied the essence of the Church of England. The beauty, harmony, and simplicity of the English liturgical text, rendered into Italian, was expected to demonstrate that the English Church came closest to the apostolic model. Beginning in the Venetian Republic and ending with the Italian Risorgimento, the leitmotif running through the various incarnations of this project was the promotion of top-down reform according to the model of the Church of England itself. These ventures mostly had little real impact on Italian history: as Roy Foster once wrote, "the most illuminating history is often written to show how people acted in the expectation of a future that never happened." This book presents one of those histories. Making Italy Anglican tells the story of a fruitless encounter that helps us better to understand both the self-perception of the Church of England's international role and the cross-cultural and religious relations between Britain and Italy. Stefano Villani shows how Italy, as the heart of Roman Catholicism, was--over a long period of time--the very center of the global ambitions of the Church of England.

Il movimento pentecostale è un fenomeno cristiano che per le proporzioni assunte, dopo la Pentecoste narrata negli Atti degli apostoli, è il primo movimento cristiano di massa che ha al suo centro l’esperienza e l’azione dello Spirito santo. Non era mai successo qualcosa del genere. Il cristianesimo pentecostale ruota intorno allo Spirito santo, sempre devotamente menzionato nella tradizione cristiana, ma mai veramente conosciuto. Per questa ragione il movimento pentecostale deve superare la sua assolutizzazione, cioè il fatto di considerarsi la perfetta realizzazione storica del cristianesimo allontanandosi dalle altre espressioni cristiane; l’ecumene cristiana, dal canto suo, deve prendere sul serio la presenza pentecostale e non scartarla come semplice folclore religioso o pura euforia o ebbrezza spirituale. La rilevanza della diffusione del pentecostalesimo a livello internazionale è da tempo oggetto di indagine storica e di analisi in diverse discipline e ha indotto a nuove chiavi di lettura per interpretare la cosiddetta «permanenza del sacro» nel mondo contemporaneo e rivisitare la teoria dell’ineluttabilità della scolarizzazione. Gli studi sull’articolazione del fenomeno in Italia sono ancora pochi. Questo volume raccoglie gli atti di un convegno di studi che ha incrociato diverse prospettive di analisi e intende contribuire a una maggiore conoscenza del mondo pentecostale nel nostro Paese offrendo una lettura intellettualmente onesta e metodologicamente sicura di una spiritualità complessa, ma dinamica e significativa.
