It examines some of the first grammars and arguments for French spellings, deciphers text from this period, and presents advanced linguistic concepts. Peter A. Machonis' book is useful both as a textbook for courses in French, the History of the French language, and as a monograph for researchers and graduate students in French linguistics. It provides a succinct linguistic account of this transitional period in the evolution of the French language."
