Das vorliegende Buch, im Original "Story of the Wreck of the Titanic", wurde bereits 1912 nur wenige Monate nach der Katastrophe von Marshall Everett herausgegeben und aus Augenzeugenberichten und Zeitungsartikeln zusammengestellt. Auch wenn die Hauptintention des nun erstmals in deutscher Sprache erscheinenden Buches - Beteiligte und Überlebende zu Helden zu verklären - und der oftmals religiöse Beigeschmack aus heutiger Sicht dick aufgetragen erscheinen mögen, so schafft die "Geschichte des Untergangs der RMS Titanic" doch gerade dadurch eine eindrucksvolle Authentizität und Nähe zu dem schrecklichen Ereignis und zeigt uns auf, wie der Zeitgeist vor 100 Jahren versuchte, solch einen Schock zu verarbeiten. Höchst spannend zu lesen sind zum Beispiel die Zeugenvernehmungen und Erklärungsversuche, wie es zu dem Unglück kommen konnte. Denn bis auf wenige Ausnahmen war bereits 1912 bewiesen, was uns heute - 100 Jahre später - oftmals als neueste Forschungsergebnisse präsentiert wird. Die vielen Legenden und schrillen Vermutungen entstanden erst Jahre nach dem Untergang. Für den Titanic-Kenner und Neuling bietet das Buch eine handliche Zusammenfassung aller wichtigen Zeitdokumente.
