In the late nineteenth century, the British Empire commanded the seas and possessed a vast Indian Empire, as well as other extensive dominions in South East Asia, Australasia, America and Africa.??To secure the trade route to the glittering riches of the orient, the port of Berbera in Somaliland was taken from the feeble grasp of an Egyptian monarch, and to secure that port, treaties were concluded with the fierce and warlike nomad tribes who roamed the inhospitable wastes of the hinterland, unequivocally granting them 'the gracious favour and protection of the Queen'. But there arose in that wilderness a man of deep and unalterable convictions; the Sayyid, the 'Mad Mullah', who utilised his great poetic and oratorical gifts with merciless and unrelenting fury to convince his fellow nomads to follow him in an anti- Christian and anti-colonial crusade. At great expense, four Imperial expeditions were sent to crush him and to support his terrified opponents; four times the military genius of the Sayyid eluded them.??It was at this point that the rising voice of Winston Churchill convinced his Liberal colleagues to abandon the expensive contest and retreat to the coast. By this betrayal, one third of the British 'protected' population perished.??It wasn't until after the Great War that Churchill, now Minister for both War and Air, as well as a major influence in the rise of Air Power, was able to redeem this betrayal. The part he played in the destruction of the Sayyid's temporal power at this point was substantial, and the preservation of the Royal Air Force was also secured. Governments and powerful civic leaders try to solve financial insolvency by collecting past due fines from dubiously convicted drunk drivers in a draconian manner, establishing a work camp in an inhospitable part of another Land for those who do not pay.The camp is an almost perfect place to hide prisoners and staff who have information or skills that might be damaging to the elite. The ex-offender chief of staff at the camp is appointed to hide him because he has damaging information in a massive civil case against the Parish of St. James. His brutality causes the death of a prisoner. The efforts to cover up the tragedy lead to overreaction, and further fatal mistakes. In the end, the abused prisoners are granted their freedom if they accept banishment, allowing the politicians and powerful of St. James to wash their hands of the debacle.

You can flip around in it all day like the yellow pages and always wind up home. In this respect it is like the old saying that all roads lead to Mecca. It is poetry, fiction, and nonfiction with a section listing hundreds of unanswerable questions that are thought provoking and good topics of conversation. There are also several short stories which start out linear and end up Joycian. The book covers politics, poetry, and all sorts of paradoxes. It is philosophical and sometimes just plain dumb. I think you will find it an honest read: sometimes whimsical, sometimes seriously difficult, sometimes fusing an antithesis or two often just by accident--hence the conclusion that Lady Luck has smiled on this book. Your author has written three other volumes which could or could not hook up quite nicely with this one if everything in the world were a train. Mr. Houlihan is also a member of the Lefty Jones Band (but it is not his fault). He refuses to play out or be seen in public.
