Christmas is not a holiday just for Christians anymore, if it ever was. Embedded in calendars around the world and long a lucrative merchandising opportunity, Christmas enters multicultural, multi-religious public spaces, provoking both festivity and controversy, hospitality and hostility. The Public Work of Christmas provides a comparative historical and ethnographic perspective on the politics of Christmas in multicultural contexts ranging from a Jewish museum in Berlin to a shopping boulevard in Singapore. A seasonal celebration that is at once inclusive and assimilatory, Christmas offers a clarifying lens for considering the historical and ongoing intersections of multiculturalism, Christianity, and the nationalizing and racializing of religion. The essays gathered here examine how cathedrals, banquets, and carols serve as infrastructures of memory that hold up Christmas as a civic, yet unavoidably Christian holiday. At the same time, the authors show how the public work of Christmas depends on cultural forms that mark, mask, and resist the ongoing power of Christianity in the lives of Christians and non-Christians alike. Legislated into paid holidays and commodified into marketplaces, Christmas has arguably become more cultural than religious, making ever wider both its audience and the pool of workers who make it happen every year. The Public Work of Christmas articulates a fresh reading of Christmas – as fantasy, ethos, consumable product, site of memory, and terrain for the revival of exclusionary visions of nation and whiteness – at a time of renewed attention to the fragility of belonging in diverse societies. Contributors include Herman Bausinger (Tübingen), Marion Bowman (Open), Juliane Brauer (MPI Berlin), Simon Coleman (Toronto), Yaniv Feller (Wesleyan), Christian Marchetti (Tübingen), Helen Mo (Toronto), Katja Rakow (Utrecht), Sophie Reimers (Berlin), Tiina Sepp (Tartu), and Isaac Weiner (Ohio State).

What is your attitude toward the holiday season? Do you have the "Christmas Spirit"? Do you refuse to observe such "pagan celebrations"? Or do you just say, "Bah, Humbug!"? Rosemary St. Nichols is a single mother (and a "Recovering Catholic") who has just moved to River City with her son Jonathan. Here, she meets Teniqua Johnson and her son Mychal, who celebrate Kwanzaa rather than Christmas. After a Nativity Scene placed outside City Hall causes controversy in the community, Rosemary wonders, "If even churches can't agree to cooperate, how in the world will all the people in River City ever learn to put aside our differences-if even for one day?" There are no angelic visitations or "Christmas miracles" here, but the residents of Riverside Apartments receive a lesson in cooperation, not to mention living together in harmony and mutual respect. Learn more about your own holiday traditions, and those of others-as well as about those who don't celebrate the season at all-in this moving journey of discovery and rediscovery of what the holiday season is all about. (Readers of the author's earlier novel Tattered Pilgrims will be pleased to see the reappearance of several of its characters in this book.)

In 24 Christmas Stories: Faith and Traditions from Around the World, award-winning author Judith Bouilloc explores present-day Christmas traditions, as well as the holiday's history in many regions, brought to life by various artists. In Lorraine, France, Rita can't wait for Saint Nicholas Day (he'll bring little presents for the good girls and boys, and potatoes for the naughty ones). In Iran, Melchior trudges through the fog and is joined on his travels by two other men who are following the brightest star in the sky, guiding them to an unknown but special destination. In Italy, St. Francis plans the very first living Nativity, determined to share with his local friends the story of Jesus in the manger. His Nativity scene goes on to inspire generations to come. In Japan, Shusaku makes paper cranes in preparation of Christmas and in honor of Sadako. In the United States, Trinity revises her mother's to-do list to put the highest priority items at the top as they get ready to welcome friends and family. Whether you choose to read one story a night leading up to Christmas, or multiple in one sitting, you're sure to learn something new about Christmas and the many different ways it's celebrated around the world every December.
