ABSTRACT: Monodispersed core/shell silica particles with a hard core and microporous shell have been synthesized by surfactant template method. Ca. 75nm silica particles were used as core and Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16TAB) as template for generating microporous shell. Concentration of the surfactant was varied and the growth of porous shell analyzed using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption. TGA and FTIR were used to confirm the surfactant removal after heat treatment. The synthesized particles were monodispersed and had a hard core and highly microporous shell with pore size in the range of 1.3-2.2nm and total pore volume in the range of 0.57-0.77cm3/g. The Chemical mechanical Planarization (CMP) performance of core/shell silica particles were analyzed and compared with that of core silica particles. Polishing was done on copper wafers and low-k dielectric material such as black diamond. The core/shell silica particles produced higher removal rates and better surface finish for both the wafers. Spectral reflectance technique and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used as analyzing tool.

Today's technology has to aim at the environmental conscious development with new, environmentally friendly processes and materials. Nanotechnology presents eligible solutions to the challenges of modern materials science. It deals with small amount of matter (e.g. thin film), which - by its nanostructure and/or unusual composition - provides traditional bulk materials with new or improved functionalities. The aim of the present work was to elaborate multifunctional nanostructured thin layers for possible application as a) self-cleaning antireflective coating and b) active top layer on porous ceramic membranes coupling separation and photocatalysis or separation and chemisorption. Wet colloidal chemistry routes were used for the synthesis of silica, ZnO and silica/ZnO core/shell nanoparticles. Self-cleaning, antireflective coatings were obtained with Langmuir-Blodgett technique. Porous ceramic membranes were prepared for the coupling of separation with photocatalysis and separation with chemisorption using the dip coating technique.

Multifunctional silver nanoparticles have attracted widely due to their potential applications. Based on the properties of individual silver nanoparticles, such as plasmonic and antibacterial properties, silver nanoparticles can become multifunctional by surface modifications with various surfactants or they can be combined in core-shell and composite structures with the magnetic nanoparticles to form bifunctional nanoparticles. After reviewing the methods of synthesis and applications of silver nanoparticles, the chapter describes the synthesis and the properties of the new types of multifunctional silver nanomaterials based on the plasmonic behaviors of silver nanoparticles and the iron oxide Fe3O4 superparamagnetic nanoparticles. One type is a simple combination of silver nanoparticles and iron oxide nanoparticles in a silica matrix Fe3O4/Ag-4ATP@SiO2. Other types are the core-shell structured nanoparticles, where Fe3O4 nanoparticles play as the core and silver nanoparticles are the outer shell, so-called Fe3O4@SiO2-Ag and Fe3O4-Ag. In the Fe3O4@SiO2-Ag, silver nanoparticles are reduced on the surface of silica-coated magnetic core, while in Fe3O4-Ag, silver nanoparticles are directly reduced on the amino groups functionalized on the surface of magnetic nanoparticles without coating with silica. Both of types of the multifunctional silver nanoparticles show the plasmonic and magnetic properties similar as the individual silver and iron oxide nanoparticles. Finally, some applications of those multifunctional silver nanoparticles will be discussed.

A novel core-shell silica based antimicrobial nanoparticle was synthesized. The Stöber silica shell has been engineered to accommodate copper. Synthesis of the core-shell Cu-silica nanoparticle (C-S CuSiNP) involves preparation of base-hydrolyzed Stöber silica "seed" particles first, followed by the acid-catalyzed seeded growth of the Cu-silica shell layer around the core. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed monodispersed, spherical shaped nanoparticles with smooth surface morphology. Characterization of particle size distribution in solution by the Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) technique was fairly consistent with the electron microscopy results. Loading of Cu to nanoparticles was confirmed by the SEM-Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). Antibacterial efficacy of C-S CuSiNP was evaluated against E.coli and B.subtilis using Cu hydroxide ("Insoluble" Cu compound) and copper sulfate as positive control and silica "seed" particles (without Cu loading) as negative control. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of C-S CuSiNP was evaluated by measuring the fluorescent intensity of resorufin to determine the decrease in viable cells with increase in copper concentration in C-S CuSiNP. The MIC value of C-S CuSiNP against both E.coli and B.subtilis was estimated to be 4.9 ppm. Bac-light fluorescence microscopy based assay was used to count relative population of the live and dead bacteria cells. Antibacterial study clearly shows that C-S CuSiNP is more effective than insoluble Cu hydroxide particles and copper sulfate at equivalent metallic Cu concentration, suggesting more soluble Cu in C-S CuSiNP material due to its core-shell design. Keywords: core-shell nanoparticle, copper loaded silica, antibacterial, sol-gel, copper biocide.

(Cont.) The pre-emulsion strategy resulted in a decrease in particle size for the core-shell-shell nanoparticles, as shown by dynamic light scattering. Excess silica in the emulsion resulted in phase separation and opaque, brittle samples. Samples made with this incorporation strategy showed poor mechanical properties. The post-emulsion strategy also resulted in poor processing. SAXS data show that there is no long range ordering with the SiO2 and core-shell nanoparticles. However, SAXS did show the possibility of a nanopcomposite with short range ordering of silica and core-shell particles.
