Multimodal Management of Canine Osteoarthritis, Second Edition takes an evidence-based approach to the canine patient with osteoarthritis, pursuing the objective of the best available medicine by a variety of means: multiple drugs, agents, adjuncts and delivery methods. Appreciating that surgical intervention may initially be required, particularly for stabilizing a joint, the major focus in this work is the conservative management of osteoarthritis. A clear and visual approach is taken with the overlapping of two three-pointed triangles of management: medical and non-medical. The completely updated new edition offers a major new chapter on Regenerative Medicine in collaboration with Drs Sherman Canapp and Brittany Jean Carr. It is recommended for any small animal veterinary practitioner, as well as researchers and students of the RCVS CertAVP.

This CARE Book provides the hard-copy documents of many of the forms you will find on CanineArthritis.org. You can make photocopies of the pages, use them in your practice and distribute them to your clients if they request or prefer reading paper over a website. The first section includes forms you can use to help identify OA and pain and complete a comprehensive orthopedic exam. Be sure to read the accompanying articles that walk you through the history and exam forms. This section also includes the "Is My Dog in Pain" quiz. We know that clients have a hard time knowing what pain looks like in their dog, so use this quiz to help your clients recognize the subtle signs of discomfort. Dr. Kirkby Shaw also find that using a Client Specific Outcome Measure form helps identify functional limitations specific for the individual dog, which guides our goal setting and expectations. The next section includes handouts on several conditions, including an overview of OA, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and CCL injuries. Dr. Kirkby Shaw typically sends these forms home with clients after being given a detailed description of the condition during the consult. If you don't have time to cover the details of the condition, you can provide these forms and also send the associated links to videos I have made that describe each condition. You will find those links in the Shareable Resources section of the CARE website.Next you will find resources specific to treating OA. There is a document on safe use of NSAIDs, which is not necessarily meant for you to give to owners, but is an important reminder of how these medications can be used safely and very effectively as part of a multi-modal plan. Weight management is the single most important aspect of managing OA. We have developed a tool to help you calculate ideal caloric intake. This tool is most helpful when used online because you plug in the numbers (body weight, BCS, calories in food and calories in treats), and it tells you how much food and treats the dog should get to reach an ideal BCS of 5/9! You will also find a chart of calories in common human foods and a dosing chart for Omega 3s. Lastly, you will find forms that you can provide clients that will help them track calories and exercise and/or a daily log that combines both. It typically takes weeks and months to see significant changes with our treatment plans, so using these journals can help clients stay compliant and see small changes that lead to big results over time.
