This thesis deals with stochastic inventory models that focus on the following two aspects in particular: (i) the coordination of multiple supply sources and (ii) the optimization of the inventory allocation and sizing in multi-echelon systems. Initially, single-echelon inventory models with multiple sourcing and multi-echelon inventory models with single sourcing are analyzed separately. In the former case, the goal is the identification of effective inventory control policies. In the latter case, the focus lies on the development of a new multi-echelon approach, which combines the two major frameworks currently available in the literature. Subsequently, both aspects are integrated into a multi-echelon inventory model with multiple sourcing.

Successful supply chain management requires an effective sourcing strategy to counteract uncertainties in both the suppliers and demands. Therefore, determining a better sourcing policy is critical in most of industries. Supplier selection is an essential task within the sourcing strategy. A well-selected set of suppliers makes a strategic difference to an organization's ability to reduce costs and improve the quality of its end products. To discover the cost structure of selecting a supplier, it is more interesting to further determine appropriate levels of inventory in each echelon for different suppliers. This dissertation focuses on the study of the integrated supplier selection, order allocation and inventory control problems in a multi-echelon supply chain. First, we investigate a non-order-splitting inventory system in supply chain management. In particular, a buyer firm that consists of one warehouse and N identical retailers procures a type of product from a group of potential suppliers, which may have different prices, ordering costs, lead times and have restriction on minimum and maximum total order size, to satisfy stochastic demand. A continuous review system that implements the order quantity, reorder point (Q, R) inventory policy is considered in the proposed model. The model is solved by decomposing the mixed integer nonlinear programming model into two sub-models. Numerical experiments are conducted to evaluate the model and some managerial insights are obtained with sensitivity analysis. In the next place, we extend the study to consider the multi-echelon system with the order-splitting policy. In particular, the warehouse acquisition takes place when the inventory level depletes to a reorder point R, and the order Q is simultaneously split among m selected suppliers. This consideration is important since it could pool lead time risks by splitting replenishment orders among multiple suppliers simultaneously. We develop an exact analysis for the order-splitting model in the multi-echelon system, and formulate the problem in a Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) model. To demonstrate the solvability and the effectiveness of the model, we conduct several numerical analyses, and further conduct simulation models to verify the correctness of the proposed mathematical model.

This paper presents a typology and classifies the literature on inventory models with multiple sourcing options. The categories for classification include the number of considered echelons, the source of uncertainty, the model structure, as well as the general research approach. By means of the classification, the existing research is reviewed and insights and gaps are identified. The literature shows that stochasticity, constraints, cost structures and lead times have a significant impact on the sourcing decision. High demand volatility as well as high uncertainty in the lead time, yield or disruption of a primary source indicates a significant value of a second, reliable, fast but more expensive source. The same is true if a buyer has limited storage space or if the primary supplier is constrained in capacity or order size. If the emergency supplier has a minimum order requirement or the buyer is limited financially, the opposite is true and single sourcing is viable. Furthermore, besides a small emergency cost premium, large lead time differences between suppliers and short emergency lead times favor multiple sourcing. The review identifies several research gaps. Firstly, one important gap is on multi-echelon supply chain structures. Secondly, simple policy structures for more realistic and complex problem settings with multiple suppliers, multiple decision criteria and multiple, possibly correlated, sources of uncertainty should be investigated. Lastly, data driven approaches in industry applications could be a focal point of future research efforts.

Dual sourcing practices have become increasingly popular with firms. To examine the actual behavior in such settings, we conducted a laboratory experiment with a multi-period single-echelon inventory model with a fast, expensive and a slow, inexpensive supplier. Compared to single-sourcing, the difference between the normatively achievable and the empirically realized cost decreases considerably. We find that the overusage of the fast supplier is driven by reference-dependent preferences. In general, subjects use order smoothing strategies and tend to choose a preferred supply mode. Furthermore, the individual variation in cognitive reflection drives cost differences: Subjects with a higher cognitive score have less random errors, order smoothing and supply line underweighting; they also overuse the fast option to a smaller extent. Our findings highlight the importance of having procurement professionals with a high cognitive reflection and the benevolent nature of the additional supply mode primarily due to its lower lead time.

Supply Chain Management (SCM) is an important part of most companies and applying the appropriate strategy is essential for managers in competitive industries and markets. In this context, Inventory Management plays a crucial role. Different inventory systems are widely used in practice. However, it is fundamentally difficult to optimize, especially in multi-echelon networks. A key challenge in managing inventory is dealing with uncertainties in supply and demand. The simultaneous decrease of customer service and increase of inventory-related costs are the most significant effects of such uncertainties. To deal with this pattern, supply chain managers need to establish more effective and more flexible sourcing and distribution strategies. In this thesis, a “framework to optimize inventory decisions in multi-echelon distribution networks under supply and demand uncertainty” is proposed. In the first part of the research work, multi-echelon distribution systems, subject to demand uncertainty, are studied. Such distribution systems are one of the most challenging inventory network topologies to analyze. The optimal inventory and sourcing policies for these systems are not yet unknown. We consider a basic type of distribution network with a single family product through a periodic review setting. Based on this property, a two-stage mixed integer programming approach is proposed to find the optimal inventory-related decisions considering the non-stationary demand pattern. The model, which is based on a Distribution Requirements Planning (DRP) approach, minimizes the expected total cost composed of the fixed allocation, inventory holding, procurement, transportation, and back-ordering costs. Alternative inventory optimization models, including the lateral transshipment strategy and multiple sourcing, are thus built, and the corresponding stochastic programs are solved using the sample average approximation method. Several problem instances are generated to validate the applicability of the model and to evaluate the benefit of lateral transshipments and multiple sourcing in reducing the expected total costs of the distribution network. An empirical investigation is also conducted to validate the numerical findings by using the case of a major French retailer's distribution network. The second part of the research work is focused on the structure of the optimal inventory policy which is investigated under supply disruptions. A two-stage stochastic model is proposed to solve a capacitated multi-echelon inventory optimization problem considering a stochastic demand as well as uncertain throughput capacity and possible inventory losses, due to disruptions. The model minimizes the total cost, composed of fixed allocation cost, inventory holding, transportation and backordering costs by optimizing inventory policy and flow decisions. The inventory is controlled according to a reorder point order-up-to-level (s, S) policy. In order to deal with the uncertainties, several scenario samples are generated by Monte Carlo method. Corresponding sample average approximations programs are solved to obtain the adequate response policy to the inventory system under disruptions. In addition, extensive numerical experiments are conducted. The results enable insights to be gained into the impact of disruptions on the network total cost and service level. In both parts of the research, insights are offered which could be valuable for practitioners. Further research possibilities are also provided.

In today's highly competitive market environment, only companies with a highly efficient supply chain management, which integrates all decisions in various levels of planning and operations, can survive. These decisions must be coordinated and under the same goal, which is to minimize the total systemwide costs of the firm while products are manufactured and distributed to end-customers or retailers. In this study, the focus is on a pull-based supply chain, customer demand driven, multiple products and multiple echelon distribution system consisting of m manufacturing centers, n distribution centers, and p retailers or customers. The objectives of this study can be categorized into two parts. The first objective is to present a general framework of the design and configuration of the supply chain network at strategic and tactical planning levels in a single-product and multi-product multi-echelon supply chain systems. The problems deal with determining the appropriate number, location, and size of each manufacturing facility and distribution center/warehouse that should be used within the logistics network. The second objective of the research is to present a methodology for using a pull-based supply chain system both for a single-product system and multi-product system at the operational planning level. The problems deal with determining which products customers will receive from each available manufacturing facility and distribution center, what production quantities of the products should be manufactured by a particular manufacturing facility, and what quantities of each product and ways of shipment should be used from manufacturing facilities to distribution centers and to customers. Based on the nature of these large-scale mixed integer programming problems, decomposition heuristic algorithms based on relationships between primal and dual decompositions are developed. The mathematical models and heuristic algorithms are then demonstrated and evaluated on several sets of randomly generated problems. Although the heuristic algorithms do not guarantee optimum solutions, their results of the test problems suggest that the heuristics are effective in solving fairly large problems with reasonable computational time. Furthermore, they produce superior performances as compared to the other techniques that are tested.
