The Pinakothek der Moderne is the third in a group of major galleries housing the Bavarian Art Collections in Munich. As a museum dedicated to the art of the twentieth century, it is modelled along the lines of famous Museum of Modern Art in New York and provides a broad platform for presenting the holdings of four separate state institutions previously scattered around the city. [...] Architect Stephan Braunfels has accomodated the individual needs of these four collections, exercising remarkable versatility within the framework of a stringently organised floor plan. The building features rooms with ceiling heights that vary from half a level to three full storeys. Walls of extreme length or height make it possible to display an enormous range of picture formats. There are square, rectangular and circular units, intimate cabinets, spacious rooms and vast halls free of pillars or supports, where an entire temporary exhibition can be mounted. The focus of the composition is an enormous rotunda with cupola, reminiscent of the central pillared hall of Schinkel's Altes Museum in Berlin, which does not merely pander to the wish for prestigious representation, but which actually plays an important functionnal role within the complex as a whole, forming an entrance and reception hall and central access area. The work of Döllgast, described by the architect himself as a?combination of undisputable avant-garde and reserved rear guard?, has always fascinated the Munich-based architectural photographer Klaus Kinold. Accordingly, the photographs in this richly illustrated volume were born of empathy and created as part of a personal project. Taken in the early 1980s, they are already historic due to the destruction of some of Döllgast?s work. They also pay tribute to Döllgast the combative person, who with his controversially assessed restorations realised exemplary solutions for new construction in historic surroundings. The bilingual volume includes the first English-language essays on Döllgast.

Munich-based "03 Architects" have in recent years developed a distinctive way of working for urban spaces. No matter if the task is a warehouse for building materials, a kindergarden, or planning an entire new neighbourhood, "03 Architects " designs always look closely at the narrative qualities of the city. For this book the architects have invited the photographer Walter Mair for a dialogue on their work, concepts and methods. Mair documents "03 Architects " work with great sensitivity for their ideas, but also for the context which the buildings reflect and enable, and thereby reaches beyond the classic architectural documentation. The architects respond to Mair s images in brief, associative texts. An introductory essay on the fundamental questions and problems of architectural photography by the renowned architectural critic and curator Hubertus Adam rounds out this book with its particular haptic and manufacturing quality. Munich And Memory written by Gavriel D. Rosenfeld and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-22 with Architecture categories.

Munich, notorious in recent history as the capital of the Nazi movement, is the site of Gavriel Rosenfeld's stimulating inquiry into the German collective memory of the Third Reich. Rosenfeld shows, with the aid of a wealth of photographs, how the city's urban form developed after 1945 in direct reflection of its inhabitants' evolving memory of the Second World War and the Nazi dictatorship. In the second half of the twentieth century, the German people's struggle to come to terms with the legacy of Nazism has dramatically shaped nearly all dimensions of their political, social, and cultural life. The area of urban development and the built environment, little explored until now, offers visible evidence of the struggle. By examining the ways in which the people of Munich reconstructed the ruins of their historic buildings, created new works of architecture, dealt with surviving Nazi buildings, and erected new monuments to commemorate the horrors of the recent past, Rosenfeld identifies a spectrum of competing memories of the Nazi experience. Munich’s postwar development was the subject of constant controversy, pitting representatives of contending aesthetic and mnemonic positions against one another in the heated battle to shape the city’s urban form. Examining the debates between traditionalists, modernists, postmodernists, and critical preservationists, Rosenfeld shows that the memory of Nazism in Munich has never been "repressed" but has rather been defined by constant dissension and evolution. On balance, however, he concludes that Munich came to embody in its urban form a conservative view of the past that was inclined to diminish local responsibility for the Third Reich.

The "creative reconstruction" of damaged buildings was an important topic in architecture after the Second World War, particularly in Bavaria. The Munich architect Hans Döllgast (1891-1974) was one of the pioneers of this development. His most important achievements include the repairs to the Alte Pinakothek, the Basilica of St. Bonifaz and the main municipal cemeteries. Hans Döllgast was succeeded above all by two of his students, whose work can be seen as exemplary. Karljosef Schattner (1924-2012), for many years the diocesan architect of the Bishopric of Eichstätt, saved threatened buildings in the episcopal city such as the Old Orphanage by adding a contemporary extension, or gave a new lease of life to historic buildings such as the Ulmer Hof by means of functional additions. In the case of Hirschberg Palace he boldly placed a modern wing in front of the south façade. Josef Wiedemann (1910-2001) was an outstanding architect of the reconstruction of Munich. The interpretative reconstruction of the badly damaged Glyptothek on Königsplatz is regarded as one of his masterpieces.
