While play in museums for children is not a new concept, there is little research on what play looks like for the adult visitor. This study investigates adult play in museum exhibits designed for family learning, using Stuart Brown’s (2010) typology of play. Thirty visitors were observed between five exhibits at the City Museum, St. Louis MO and Science World, Vancouver B.C. Results showed that adults do play in these exhibits, and that they engage in various types of play, typically favoring body/movement play. These findings can be used by museums to understand how to create active opportunities to fully engage adult visitors.

This study investigates the impact of implementing play in the art museum to educate and engage children aged 2 to 5, utilizing lessons learned from children’s museums. In order to establish themselves as welcoming and educative resources for children, the programing and exhibit design of art museums must support the unique needs of early learners, namely, learning through play. Within the museum field, children’s museums offer best examples of how play can be integrated into a museum environment to encourage early learning. This study was conducted in three stages using the methodology of grounded theory. The first stage investigated the educational practice grounded in play theory of the Boston Children’s Museum in Boston, Massachusetts by observing the play of children aged 2 to 5 at an exhibit in the Boston Children’s Museum. Based on this data, the second stage developed a play-based workshop for local pre-kindergartners. The third stage implemented this workshop at the Blanton Museum of Art, in Austin, Texas, collecting data through video recording and interview. Findings from this workshop led to the formation of the following grounded theory: the integration of play in the art museum affords children aged 2 to 5 a context for making meaning about the artworks, encouraging engagement with artworks and providing opportunities for child agency. Art museums can help children develop an awareness of themselves and the wider world, offering experiences to engage, teach, and empower young learners. But, first, they must learn how to play.

The popularity of video games has changed the way individuals from every demographic-age, race, gender and income-absorbs and processes information. Given this fact, museums have a strong interest in repurposing game technology to attract and engage a variety of museum learners. This project explores the potential to incorporate game design practices in museums in order to encourage active participation, interaction and collaboration on the part of visitors. By leveraging existing game technologies, the museum community stands to benefit from player engagement and immersion strategies which have already proven successful. Likewise, by incorporating such methods, museums can offer the "Nintendo generation" exciting new ways to interact with historic, cultural and scientific content in both physical and virtual environments. This project includes an in-depth background of the history of video game technology and culture, with an entire subsection devoted to games as learning platforms. The Findings section features game-based programs and exhibits which have already been piloted in museums and school classrooms. Finally, this study raises awareness among museum professionals about the pedagogical benefits of games by offering a set of recommendations about how electronic games can be used to support active learning.
