What is the relationship between Eros and music? How does the intersection of love and music contribute to define the perimeter of Early Modern love? The Early Moderns hold parallel discourses on the metaphysical doctrines of love and music as theories of harmony. Statements of love as music, of music as love, and of both as harmonic ideals, are found across a wide range of cultural contexts, highlighting the understanding of love as a cultural construct. The book assesses the complexity of cultural discourses on this linkage of Eros and music. The ambivalence of music as an erotic agent is enacted in the controversy over dancing and reflected in the ubiquitous symbolism of music instruments. Likewise, the trivialization of musical imagery in madrigal lyrics and love poetry highlights a sense of degradation and places the love-music relationship at the meeting point of two epistemes. The book also shows the symbolic deployment of the intertwined ideas of love and music in the English epyllion, and offers close readings of Shakespeare’s poems The Rape of Lucrece and Venus and Adonis. The book is the first to propose an overview of the theoretical, cultural and poetical intersections of Eros and music in Early Modern England. It discusses the connections in a richly interdisciplinary manner, drawing on a wealth of primary material which includes rhetoric, natural philosophy, educational literature, medicine, music theory and musical performance, dance books, performance politics, Protestant pamphlets and sermons, and emblem books.

The Muse As Eros written by Stephen Downes and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-29 with Music categories.

The Muse has long been figured as a divine or erotically alluring consort to the virile male artist, who may inspire him or lead him to the edge of madness. This book explores the changing cultural expressions of the relationship between the male artist with a beloved, imagined or desired Muse, to offer new and penetrating perspectives on musical representations and transformations of creative masculine subjectivity, and important aspects of the shift from the styles and aesthetics of Romantic Idealism to Modernist Anxiety in music of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Each of the chapters begins with explorations into male artists' relationships with their Muse, and moves to analysis and interpretation which uncovers cultural constructions of masculine artistic inspiration and production, and their association with creatively inspiring and erotically charged relationships with a Muse. New insights are offered into the musical meaning and cultural significance of selected works by Rossini, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, Wagner, Sibelius, Mahler, Bartók, Scriabin, Szymanowski, Debussy, Berg, Poulenc and Weill.

It is always important to never forget that we, male and female, were created as sexual beings by our loving God. Sex and marriage are gifts to humanity from the Creator. In the beginning, He made it so. In our hyper sexualized world, it is easy to forget that we were MADE and given the gift of sensual pleasure. The connection between God and man, God and woman, man and woman, life and sex, love and marriage are all parts of the dynamic balance of the Lord's design for us, His children. A collection of erotic nuggets dripped with rich agape, Songs of Eros gives a glimpse of the very normal and sexualized lives of biblical greats. No filth, no rot, just man made by God to know Eros by agape. May you find in their stories, your story. May you find inspiration that your home, your life, your marriage, your loving can be more. May you understand that to truly know a thing, you must understand its roots. May you appreciate that God intended marriages to be enjoyed, not endured.

Contending With Binary Oppositions In Musical Aesthetics Through Eros written by Dhayoung Yoon and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021 with categories.

Throughout history, musical aesthetics has been characterized by binary oppositions. For example, some argue music’s expressivity is rooted in its internal, formal configurations while others do so by pointing to music’s representational qualities. Or some emphasize music's sensorial nature, i.e., the necessity of music to be implicated in sound and time, while others emphasize its incorporeal aspect. However, looking at these oppositions through the lens of Eros gives us a more fruitful understanding of musical aesthetics where integration of opposing views is possible. Eros, when defined as a drive/instinct to sublimate oneself in order to create higher unities, can explain these opposing views while incorporating the sense of longing and delight that accompanies musical experience. Music triggers erotic desire in us through its sensorial beauty which is manifested in sonic configuration of forms. Eros can be seen as a modified version of behavioral mimesis which is a primaeval impulse to be like the other. Thus, while affirming the formalistic creed, Eros also redefines the representational view by redeeming the concept of imitation in music.

While writing Civilization and Its Discontents (1938) toward the end of his life, Sigmund Freud postulated a theory of competing drives which exist in the human psyche. Freud pitted a drive for death (Thanatos) against a drive for eroticism (Eros). Unlike Freud, the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche believed that the relationship between life and death was not oppositional, but rather in a state of flux. Richard Wagner, on the other hand, treated the relationship in his opera Tristan and Isolde as one in which love and death merge to transcend the physical world. This paper sets out to understand how twentieth century filmmakers use musical motifs in their work to illuminate a dialectic between Eros and Thanatos, following the psychoanalytic theories of Freud, the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche or the art of Richard Wagner. The filmmakers in this study, Luis Buñuel, Salvador Dalí, Luchino Visconti, and Stanley Kubrick, use musical motifs of pre-existing classical music of Germany and Austro-Hungary as well as popular music to shed light on the relationship between Eros and Thanatos. I analyzed the music and visual images of four films: Un Chien Andalou (1928) L'Age D'Or (1930), Death in Venice (1971) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999) to show how the filmmakers' musical choices help demonstrate the Eros-Thanatos relationship in the psychology of the characters. The characters in each film are associated with a piece of music, specifically Wagner's Tristan and Isolde, Gustav Mahler's Adagietto from his Fifth Symphony, and György Ligeti's Musica Ricercata II. I found that Buñuel and Dalí's films follow Freud in a pessimistic view of the Eros Thanatos conflict, Visconti's film follows both a Wagnerian and Nietzschean view between Eros and Death, one of transcendence and flux, and Kubrick ultimately maintains an ambivalent view of the two drives in line with Freud. As cultural products of the twentieth century, the films can provide evidence of a death drive, illuminate a possible relationship between Eros and Thanatos, can tell us how the two drives are oriented in the psyche, and also provide a way of looking back at the events of the twentieth century.
