"Burney visited many of the most important cultural centers in France, Switzerland and, especially, in Italy. Armed with letters of introduction he met countless prominent musicians, composers, artists and men of letters - including Balbastre, Voltaire, Rousseau, Padre Martini, Latilla, Barietti, Farinelli and Caffarelli, Guarducci and Nardini. Constantly attending concerts, visiting churches, museums, libraries and art galleries Burney observed and noted in illuminating detail everything that he saw and did, everyone he met and conversed with. He was thus able to provide and invaluable record of the state of music, and the arts generally, in France and Italy at that time." -- back cover

The Notation Is Not The Music written by Barthold Kuijken and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-13 with Music categories.

Written by a leading authority and artist of the historical transverse flute, The Notation Is Not the Music offers invaluable insight into the issues of historically informed performance and the parameters—and limitations—of notation-dependent performance. As Barthold Kuijken illustrates, performers of historical music should consider what is written on the page as a mere steppingstone for performance. Only by continual examination and reexamination of the sources to discover original intent can an early music practitioner come close to authentic performance.

During the late eighteenth century, a musical–cultural phenomenon swept the globe. The English square piano—invented in the early 1760s by an entrepreneurial German guitar maker in London—not only became an indispensable part of social life, but also inspired the creation of an expressive and scintillating repertoire. Square pianos reinforced music as life’s counterpoint, and were played by royalty, by musicians of the highest calibre and by aspiring amateurs alike. On Sunday, 13 May 1787, a square piano departed from Portsmouth on board the Sirius, the flagship of the First Fleet, bound for Botany Bay. Who made the First Fleet piano, and when was it made? Who owned it? Who played it, and who listened? What music did the instrument sound out, and within what contexts was its voice heard? What became of the First Fleet piano after its arrival on antipodean soil, and who played a part in the instrument’s subsequent history? Two extant instruments contend for the title ‘First Fleet piano’; which of these made the epic journey to Botany Bay in 1787–88? The First Fleet Piano: A Musician’s View answers these questions, and provides tantalising glimpses of social and cultural life both in Georgian England and in the early colony at Sydney Cove. The First Fleet piano is placed within the musical and social contexts for which it was created, and narratives of the individuals whose lives have been touched by the instrument are woven together into an account of the First Fleet piano’s conjunction with the forces of history. View ‘The First Fleet Piano: Volume Two Appendices’. Note: Volume 1 and 2 are sold as a set ($180 for both) and cannot be purchased separately.

Mozart written by Stanley Sadie and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01-19 with Music categories.

In the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, few people would question his rating as the most popular of all classical composers. Yet there exists no substantial, up-to-date English-language study of the man and his works. Aiming to fill this gap, Sadie draws substantially on family correspondence, and discusses individual works in sequence, relating them to the events and relationships of his life. Much new material connected with Mozart has come to light in recent years and understanding of the context for Mozart's music has broadened immensely. Sadie's biography digests and interprets this corpus of new information.
